Chum Darang on being called momo, corona
Talking about the difficulties she faced in the industry and the kind of comments she’s heard directed to her and other actors from North East India, Chum Darang said, “This is actually sensitive and very new for us. I’m not trying to create a difference between us and the rest of India, but it is important for people to know (about us). If can know north mein kya hai, south mein kya hain, west mein kya hain, so others should also know ki east mein kya hain.”
Elaborating on the kind of comments she’s heard directed to North East Indians, “There are some words that people used to say like to demean us because we look different – we might come across like we are not from this country. But we are and it’s their fault not knowing about their country. Names toh bohot saare hai. I don’t want to take names. When the coronavirus came in 2020… I’ll say it – before it was momo and chow-chow, when Corona came (we were called) Corona, so it was hurtful. I would not do something like that to some other person”
She added, “I did break down at times. Being strong is something a lot of people can’t do. I do break down but I do it where I’m comfortable. I portray myself as a strong person but somewhere I’m also emotional… That’s why I’m using this show to show the world more about us.” She noted that things are changing now and people are being more sensitive towards others.
Chum on finding love in BB18
When pointed out that the Bigg Boss house is a place where friendships are formed and love stories brew, Chum Darang reveals she isn’t interested in the latter. The actress says, “Other things I’m not sure of but one thing I’m sure about is I don’t want a relationship. I’m happy (being) single. Relationships are a big no (for me) so let’s see. Friendships… I’ll make a lot of friends but no relationships. Par abhi aage jaake ulta kuch ho gaya toh I hope not, but you never know… But I’m sure, I don’t want relationships.”
