Dibyendu Bhattacharya draws difference between Anurag Kashyap & Vivek Agnihotri
When quizzed about drawing comparison between both Anurag and Vivek as directors, he said, “It’s very difficult to say. Anurag bilkul different tareeke ke director hai. Vivek ek completely alag tareeke ke director hai. Anurag ka subject alag hota hai, Vivek ka subject alag hota hai. Kashyap ke takes alag hote hain, Vivek ke takes alag hote hain. Anurag ka process alag hai, Vivek ka bhi process alag hai. Art ek point of view hai. Agar ek hi kahani teen alag-alag directors ko direct karne du, toh teenon alag-alag picture banayenge.”
He also explained how different directors approach creative freedom. He mentioned that, as far as he knows, Anurag gives his actors a lot of liberty and allows many changes. Working with him feels like a liberation. He shared that when he collaborates with Anurag, he asks, “Yaar, tu bata na main isko kaise karu?” (Tell me, how should I do this?), Anurag usually responds, “Tere ko jaisa lag raha hai, tu kar, tu bana is character ko” (Do it the way you feel, build this character). If needed, Anurag himself steps in with suggestions because the actor within him awakens. “Tu isko na aise kar de, waisa kar de,” (Try doing it this way or that way), he might say, adding his own insights to enhance the performance.
Further he continued, “Vivek bhi waise hi hai. Jab maine Vivek ke saath kaam kiya, toh Vivek bhi bole ki, ‘Bhai, tera script hai, tera role hai, tera yeh character hai, tu jaisa karna chahta hai tu mere ko karke dikha, karke bata, yaar koi tension nahi hai’. Toh point of view hai. Directors different hain. Human beings alag hain, socio-political background se aaye hue log hain, toh unki alag-alag soch hoti hai.”
The actor also shared his take on racism faced in the industry and being typecasted. Bhattacharya further discussed his journey in Bollywood industry as well.
