Abhijeet Bhattacharya is a well-known Indian singer who has sung more than 6000 songs in several languages including Hindi, Bengali, Nepali, Bhojpuri, Punjabi, and more. The singer – who is known for speaking his mind, in an exclusive chat with Bollywood Bubble got candid about many things including singers today using autotune for their music and the recreation and remixing of evergreen songs.
Abhijeet Bhattacharya on autotune usage
Talking about autotunes being used on songs today, Abhijeet Bhattacharya said, “Aap logo ko koi idea nahi hai ki autotune kya hota hai… jaise mujhe idea nahi hai. Mujhe nahi malum. Mujhe 24 aur 25 ka total fatt se bataiye, main bata dunga – 49. Bakiyo se puchoge toh 24 aur 25 ko bhi add karne ke liye chaar baar sochenge, ya pen-paper lenge ya calculator. Toh mujhe nahi malum autotune kya hota hai, saachi main bata raha hu.”(People do not know what autotune is, just like me. I do not know what it is. If you ask me to total 24 and 25 I’ll immediately answer 49. If you ask others, they will have to think or use a calculator to do the math.)
Abhijeet Bhattacharya continued, “Agar aap bol rahe ho ki reel mein autotune karke aa raha hai, toh mujhe nahi malum. Main toh waho dhek raha hu, waah kya surr mein gaa raha hai. Product mujhe mil raha hai. Dudh fhat gaya lekin uski koi mithai ban raha hai, uska paneer ban raha hai, toh main paneer ko aacha bolunga, main dudh phat gaya ko kyu bolunga ki dudh kharab hai? Joh autotune hai woh that is by default (phata hua dudh). Aapko malum bhi nahi woh chal raha hai saath mein.” (If you are saving reels are using autotunes, well, I don’t know. If the milk splits, its either turned into something sweet or paneer, and I call that paneer nice not the split milk bad. Autotune is like the split milk. You don’t know it’s there.)
Abhijeet further added, “Aacha hua abhi tak humare Junior, Koko aur Rocky yeh log studio paunche nahi hai. Pucho yeh log kon hai. Yeh mere pets hai. Unko bhi nahi malum autotune kya hai. Jab woh log bahar niklenge, humko marenge, kaath lenge. (It’s a good thing that Junior, Koko and Rocky haven’t gone to studios yet. Do you know who they are? They are my pets. They also don’t know what autotune is. If they go to a studio and autotune is used on their audio, they will come out and hit us, bite us.)”
“Maine aisa thodi bhauka tha? Itne sur mein maine bhauka nahi. Mai ‘woof woof’ kar raha tha aur aapne ‘woooor woooor’ yeh kaise kar diya? Mere bezati ho gayi hai. Mere pass Rocky hai, mere pass Buddy hai, mere pass Junior hai, mere pass Koko hai. Unko bulav studio mein? (They will be like, ‘When did I bark like this? I didn’t bark so melodiously.’ I was doing ‘woof woof’ and you guys make it stylish sounding like ‘wooor wooor’ – how and why did you do it? It is embarassing.’ I have 4 dogs – Rocky, Buddy, Koko and Junior, should I bring them into the studio to record them (and use autotune on it)).“
Abhijeet Bhattacharya on remakes
Talking about artist remaking and remixing out tracks, he said, “It’s a product. Aapne pehle brand banaya, baad mein product bana rahe. Aapko malum hai jab channels naya naya shuru hota tha, humko sirf yeh malum tha ki yeh wala channel hai. Koi bhi channel chale, hum ussi channel ka naam lete. Jaise photocopy is a verb lekin proper noun tha Xerox. Hum bolte Xerox, toh humlog proper noun hai. Hum Abhijeet hai, yeh singer hai aisa nahi. So, hum proper noun hai. Humara gaana aur main proper noun humesha rahega.”
Abhijeet Bhattacharya continued, “Mere gaane jab Kishore Kumar ke aate hai na, toh maine Kishore Kumar ke gaane gaane maine shuru kiye after I became Abhijeet uske pehle nahi. Uske pehle I was rejected. Kishore Kumar ke version ke liye mujhe reject kiya gaya tha. Baad mein mujhe isliye liya gaya kyuki I will not sound like version. Then it became Kishore da ke Abhijeet, Abhijeet ke Kishore da ke gaane. Main abhi bhi bolta hu I am a bad copy of anything. Mujhse copy karane ka koshish kare, toh I’m the worse.”
