Adhyayan Suman is the son of actor Shekhar Sumar. The father-son duo, who are currently impressing audiences worldwide as Khan Bahadur Zulfikar Ahmed and Nawab Zorawar Ali Khan, respectively, in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi, share a very close bond. But did you know, the ‘Manav Hatya’ actor has never helped him son land a film?
During an exclusive chat with Bollywood Bubble, Adhyayan got candid about being cast in films solely because of his talent and no calls or influence of his father. The 36-year-old actor also spoke about how Heartless – a 2014 medical thriller directed by Shekhar Suman, was made only because of its story and not to relaunch him in Bollywood.
Adhyayan Suman on Shekhar Sumar not helping him get films
Reflecting on his 15-year-long journey in Bollywood, Adhyayan Suman said, “I think it’s been great. Now that I look back, when I’m doing something so prominent and I’m doing something that has given me massive validation as an actor, now when I look back I think I can clearly, you know, tell people that the journey has been eye-opening. It is something that I’ve learned from, and gained massive wisdom from.”
He continued, “You have to understand that I was very protected (especially after losing my brother). They were very protective of me till the point where I was left. They (then) said you are grown now, go and find your own opportunities, go and knock on the door yourself. and that’s how Haal–e–dil happened – I auditioned, I got my first film. Then Raaz – The Mystery Continues happened. I love the fact that my father never called up people for me

Adhyayan Suman continued, “I love the fact that my father never supported me that way, there was emotional support, and there was financial support. Beyond that, there were no plans ki ‘Adhyayan ke liye yeh films banenge’. And even though my father could have made a lot of films apart from Heartless (he didn’t). The film was not made to relaunch me. It was made because it was a beautiful story that we wanted to tell. It was connected to my brother whom we lost. I feel like if I had not been through that 15 years of my life, I feel Zoravar wouldn’t have been born.”
The ‘Heeramandi’ actor continued, “If you look at my 15-year-long career, mere papa ne kissiko phone nahi kiya. He never called anybody. The entire journey has been mine. Anything good or bad I did in my career they were my choice. I got them on my own merit, on my own talent. My reason for becoming successful is not so that I can own the cars and the houses. I (did it) for my parents to be really proud of me. Their being proud means the world to me.”
