Gauahar Khan on her dance numbers

When quizzed whether she ever was apprehensive on doing dance numbers, the actress said, “When I did item songs, everybody said, ‘Oh my God, don’t become an item girl, you’ll never get other work’. Today, the ‘IT girls’ are the item girls; they are doing everything. Take it from anybody who’s doing really well in the song and dance business, they’re all doing everything. So, Alhamdulillah, I’ve been breaking norms for the past 20, 22 years. People told me back then, ‘Don’t do Bigg Boss, you’ll become stereotyped and won’t get work’. I did that season when all the contestants were top in their fields. They were all number one in their areas, TV actors, performers, comedians, sportsmen.”

She further continued, “I was from the modelling field and the acting field, from the film industry. So, I broke that norm too. Now, people want to do Bigg Boss because they know that after that, they will go viral and get work. So, when people tell me, ‘You won’t do this’, I do it if I feel it’s right. I act 100% the same way. I’m an actor. I can play a mother, I can play a father, I can play a hero, I can play a heroine. I can play whatever I want if the character demands it.”

About her role as a mother in Lovely Lolla

Speaking about playing a mother to an adult, Gauahar had a very interesting answer. She mentioned that in the past 14 years, she had portrayed two characters apart from young ones, including a 60-year-old woman and roles from Bihar and UP, for which she received nominations for Best Supporting Actor. She also won Best Actress for her short film Peanut Butter in which she played a mother. Reflecting on her career, she questioned the idea that a 40-year-old can’t play a mother, pointing out that some people marry young and become mothers but aren’t truly ‘mothers’. She emphasised that just because she played a mother didn’t mean she was portraying an elderly, emotional character. Her role as Lola was a dynamic one, and she took it up because she understood the character’s backstory, including why she had a child at 18 and why her daughter looked like her sister.
