Gurmeet Choudhary became a household name after his portrayal of Lord Ram in popular show Ramayan in 2008. His portrayal received appreciation from all corners, to the extent that it has become an iconic role. Even today people remember him by that character and hence it’s difficult even from him to separate that character. In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Bubble, Gurmeet shares how that role created a stir and he feels overwhelmed that people accepted him.
Gurmeet Choudhary on still receiving love for Lord Ram character
Talking about how people loved his character, Gurmeet states, “Actually, I also feel proud and very happy while expressing that I was liked in the role of Ram in Ramayan. And even at that time, other makers made Ramayan, but it didn’t run as much as it should have. Arun Govil to humare sabke Bhagwan hain. Main unko bahut hi respect karta hoon unhone jo banaya woh hum aaj bhi bhool nahi sakte hain. Aur same production house ne phir Ramayan humare saath banaya aur mujhe bhi pasand kiya gaya to woh bahut badi baat thi. (Arun Govil is like Lord Ram to all of us. I have a lot of respect for him. What he created, we still can’t forget even today. And the same production house then made Ramayan with us and I was also liked by audience, so it was a big deal).”
Gurmeet on connection with the character
We further asked him whether he was able to separate from the character. The actor said, “I could not. You know we have heard that if someone is pregnant, they are told to read Ramayan.” Talking about how it was also a coincidence to get associated with the character, Gurmeet shares, “My dad keeps reading Ramayan. His name is Sitaram, my mother-in-law’s name is Sabari and my village’s name is Jairampur. So it was in my fate and maybe that’s why I got this opportunity.”
He added, “I played the role of Ram for one and a half years and shot continuously for 12 hours a day. People read it, but I was living the character. So it can never be forgotten. Ram ji is very close to my heart. That’s why I feel that in my career or at any moment in life, I never felt any hindrance. Wherever I feel that things aren’t going well, I remember Ram ji and everything gets better.”
On the work front, Gurmeet will next be seen in Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein season 2. Watch the full interview here:
