Actor-producer Jamnadas Majethia aka JD Majethia is man behind the cult television sitcoms like Khichdi and Sarabhai vs Sarabhai. He is currently producing the TV show Kuch Reet Jagat Ki Aisi Hai starting Meera Deosthale and Zaan Khan. As the show releases, JD Majethia exclusively interacted with Bollywood Bubble where he reflected on the Khichdi 2 failure, the Sarabhai vs Sarabhai sequel, and turning down Gandhi. Excerpts:
On Kuch Reet Jagat ki Aisi Hai releasing on TV
The show puts the spotlight on one of the evils of modern society, dowry. Talking about the concept and why is it relevant for television space, the producer remarked, “The tradition of Dowry prevails more in India, it is because we are conditioned in a way that weddings are bound to happen by giving expensive gifts. If you make a picture on this subject, the audience won’t be interested. That’s the reason I made this show for television as the audience will relate and get impacted by it.”
About acting taking a backseat
JD has been busy producing shows like Pushpa Impossible, Wagle Ki Duniya among others. He recently acted in Khichdi 2 after a long time. Talking about acting taking a backseat, he said, “Mera bhi bahut mann karta hai. Itna desh ne pyaar diya, respect di uske saath hi responsibility bhi aayi. And as producer mujhe jyada opportunities mil rahi hai. Toh acting ka personal goal sacrifice karke aapko bade goal pe dhyan dena padta hai. (Even I love acting, but with audience pouring in so much love there comes a responsibility. And as producer I am getting more opportunities, due to which I kept my acting goal aside). But I would love to act in films and web series.“
On turning down Gandhi
For those unaware, JD Majethia was offered Gandhi alongside Pratik Gandhi. Talking about why he turned down Hansal Mehta’s directorial, JD revealed, “Tab mere paas utna waqt nahi tha. (When I was offered the movie, I was not able to dedicate time). I was working on several projects as a producer and when I was offered that movie my father had just passed away. So I kept aside my personal goal. But I will definitely apologise to Hansal Mehta.“
JD Majethia reacts to Khichdi 2 box office failure
Khichdi 2: Mission Paanthukistan released in theatres on Diwali 2023. However, the film received a lukewarm response at the box office. Reacting to it, director Majethia remarked, “Dukh toh hota hai (It’s disheartening). The box office collection was below our expectations but it was not that bad. But there was a reason behind it as we released the film at a wrong time. When Khichdi released, it was diwali week and it’s first Sunday coincided with World Cup finals with India playing it. Unfortunately the attention was on other two events. Despite knowing it, we took a risk to release during that time. But I know for a fact that Khichdi franchise has a huge fan base, and no matter what, audience will see it whether it releases in theatre or on OTT. But yes, that Sunday went hard on us.”

JD Majethia reacts to Sarabhai VS Sarabhai and Khichdi crossover
On a parting note, JD reacted to possibility of having a crossover of Khichdi and Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai in the future. “Zaroor ban sakta hai. Pehle mai ek baar Sarabhai ka kuch karlu phir universe ka sochunga. (It can definitely happen. But I want to work on Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai franchise first, then i will think of making it a universe).”
