EXCLUSIVE: Kiran Rao on Aamir Khan doing Dangal: Everybody told him that you are going to be an ‘overweight uncle’

After Dhobi Ghat, Kiran Rao is gearing up for her directorial venture Laapataa Ladies which is backed by Aamir Khan. The two are jointly promoting the film. Kiran has served as producer on some blockbuster movies of Aamir which includes Dangal and Secret Superstars. During an exclusive chat with Bollywood Bubble, Kiran recalled how Aamir was judged during Dangal. She also reveals what prompts them to bring unique stories to light. Not only this, she also stated she admires the quality that Aamir takes the onus of his wrong career choices.

Revealing why Aamir likes to be a part of out-of-the-box stories, Kiran shared, “I believe that the story chooses Aamir rather than him choosing it. And it’s I think because Aamir organically understands the story and human beings quite well and can tell when a story has that kernel of magic that will make it in the cinema. Also, I suppose playing certain characters just excites him. Everybody told him during Dangal that you are going to be an overweight uncle. What are you doing? But it was such a great character for him that he couldn’t resist it and I think stories are like that they become irresistible. And so even say a Taare Zameen Par would not have been made perhaps by many people.  But that’s Aamir!”

During the promotions, a video of Aamir apologizing audience for objectifying women via the song Khambe Jaisi Khadi Hai went viral. Talking about how Aamir takes onus for his mistakes, she shared, “Aamir is a pretty rare character like that who’s a person who’s in the public eye and really takes responsibility for what he does. And I think that’s really admirable.”
