Konkona Sen Sharma opens up on financial independence and abuse
We happen to put forth the point that many financially independent women also have to go through physical abuse and face trauma which takes an emotional toll. Addressing this, Konkona says, “I don’t think it is about strength, because there are many strong financially independent women who are unable to leave the cycles of abuse. This is statistically true. And cycles of abuse often escalate at very dark places. So much of the focus is on what the women are not doing right. But, they are not even doing anything wrong to begin with. There is no recourse actually. And there are no shelters, there are no homes for the children.“
She added, “So the most important takeaway from this is that all women have to be financially independent, that is the most important thing, even if you are married to a wonderful person because it gives you choices. Many times they don’t have support systems, and they don’t have family members. There are many times when education is not as much. So, it is a very complicated thing. I am glad that they have taken this issue here and they have dealt with it so sensitively (in Mumbai DIaries 2)”
When pointed out that women are often asked to ‘deal’ and ‘adjust’ with things, we asked whether she has ever heard that in her life. To this, she says, “Never, I was never brought up like that. And I have always been financially independent. But, there are too many other women who go through this. This is just physical abuse but there’s so much emotional abuse and financial abuse.”
The actress added, ” I don’t think you should be allowed to get married till you are financially independent.”
This is not it, further in the interview, Konkona Sen Sharma also spoke about being relevant as an actress.
