EXCLUSIVE: Kritika Kamra recalls not getting selected for Dill Mill Gayye, “They said, ‘You are too young to play a postgraduate’

After playing memorable characters in television shows like Kitani Mohabbat Hai and Kuch Toh Log Kahenge, Kritika Kamra forayed into the films and web space. While she continues to receive rave response for her work, her journey has not been easy. In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Bubble, Kritika shares how she was supposed to audition for Dill Mill Gayye and how life changed post Kitani Mohabbat co-starring Karan Kundrra.

Kritika Karma on auditioning for Dill Mill Gayye

The actress recalls how she bagged her first show and shares her audition experience. She says, “So, they were auditioning for Dill Mill Gayye. And I went in for that. But because I was dressed a certain way, they looked at me and said, “You are too young to play a postgraduate.” I was just a school pass-out so I was quite young. So they looked at me and said, “No, you are too young for this.’ But we are making another show, called Yahan Ke Hum Sikandar. They were casting for a part of this tomboy role. Somehow that day I was dressed like that, which gave them the idea that I could fit that part they told me to audition for it. A month later they called me and told me to come to Bombay. My parents and friends were shocked but it was for real.”

Kritika on fame after Kitani Mohabbat Hai

Talking about how the show was successful catapulting her to fame overnight, she shares, “I realized that it was successful much later. It was after I finished shooting because we were shooting like crazy—16 hours, 17 hours daily. I’d leave home for the studio, go back home, sleep, and then go back to work. So, there was no time, and I didn’t know much about what was happening.”

The actress back then was dating co-star Karan Kundrra and their love story was talk of the town. Kritika added, “The show gave me financial independence and it put me in a space with actors where I was getting paid very well and also getting to do some best stuff. It was so good that I had a job to support myself. I lived unabashedly, said what I wanted to speak, and my life was pretty public. Another valuable lesson I learned early on in my career is that, don’t be aware of the camera while you are shooting. But otherwise, you don’t have to live or do everything so publicly. That’s why I am a more private person today. I really got that space.”

“So the concept of a safe space is something I understood a bit late. I was too young to get it back then. You don’t know what it is to lose something or what it is to have too much attention. You just don’t know these things unless you experience them. And from experience, I learned that these things are sacred to me. I am going to keep them close to my heart. These are things that I’m okay to be scrutinized on. Even workwise, I started boundaries about what I am willing to do and what not”, Kritika explained.
