Mouni Roy on being body-shamed at the start of her career
Talking about how she tackled body shaming, Mouni Roy says, “I’ll be very honest when I started and people used to talk, I’ve always heard, always known I’m not the best looking person in a room. And I’ve always been okay with it. But when I came to Bombay, it was somehow a problem to look different, to not look like the quintessential heroine. I’ve understood all that (being a quintessential heroine) now, but as a young girl of 19, it was very difficult. I used to cry a lot. I’ve overheard people in a room talking about me. My first 2-3 years in terms of how I looked or felt. I never… When I came here, suddenly it was I didn’t know anything about hair or makeup or how to present myself. But thankfully I was very observant and God gave me the wisdom to finally overcome it.”
Revealing how she dealt with body shaming, Mouni Roy said, “You have to give yourself love because self-love is the starting point of everything that you do in your life. Only if you give yourself love can you give it to others. Only then you can learn. If I’m in a constant state of victimising myself and feeling sympathy for myself, I wouldn’t be able to do my work well as I wouldn’t be 100% present in what I’m doing at that moment. So slowly and steadily, with my spiritual journey, I finally found some peace.”
