In a heartfelt chat with Bollywood Bubble, action director Sham Kaushal shared that he was diagnosed with stomach cancer after Asoka. Speaking about this, he said, “2001 ke baad achi filmein aur achi recognition milne lagi jaise Lakshya, Fiza. Toh Lakshya ki shooting kar rahe the humlog Leh me, nightshoot hoti thi. Toh suddenly mera stomach jaam rehne laga tha. Ek din mai army ke hospital me bhi gaya. Par shuru se attitude hai naa ke ‘thik hai aisa kuch hoga weather ki wajah se’. Fir mai Bombay aa gaya, aur waha The Forgotten Hero ki shooting kar ke next day se Diwali ka break tha. Toh Diwali ke din mera stomach sunn ho gaya.” He further recalled the time when he faced a health issue with an appendix.
Further in the interview, Sham Kaushal shared that he underwent surgery for the same and recalled Nana Patekar was also present when he had to undergo a 12-hour surgery. They were just waiting for the report. (Doctors had told me there were no chances of me staying alive.)“ He even shared he didn’t want to live as a weak individual because he had kids to take care of.
He adds, “Phir uske ek din baad me report aa gayi ke cancer hai. Par tab tak I was like, ‘thik hai yaar, koi nai’. Toh uska darr nikal gaya tha mere dimag se. Cancer hai toh hai, thik hai yaar. Jabhi mujhe operation theatre leke jaate the aur behoshi ka injection dete the, I used to enjoy that moment of numbness. Phir jabhi test kiya toh, wo cancer phaila nahi tha luckily. Phir 50 din ke baad mai hospital bhi aa gaya. Abhi toh 20 saal ho gaye, maine bhagwaan se 10 saal mange the.”
Sham Kaushal shares how his family supported him
He revealed Vicky and Sunny didn’t know that he had cancer. “My wife stood by me throughout. Kabhi mujhe wo ehsaas hone nahi diya ke kisi cheez ki kami hai. Sunny 11th me tha aur Vicky 10th me tha aur inn tak baat hi nahi pahochne di. Hospital me toh aate the. Ek raat to Vicky ne bola ke mai sounga bhi hospital me, they saw that pain. Maa pe baap pe they saw that pain. But it made them very mature. Meri wife aur maine tabhi bhi openly discuss nahi kiya hospital me.” (My wife did not let me realize that there is a shortage of anything. Sunny was in 11th and Vicky in 10th, and she didn’t let the news of my cancer reach them. They used to visit me to the hospital and Vicky used to insist on sleeping in the hospital.)
Further in the interview, Sham Kaushal also opened up about his struggling days, financial lows. Not only this, he also shared he missed his son Vicky Kaushal’s delivery when was busy shooting.
