Shahnaz Gill opens up about being trolled for her dress at TIFF
When asked about how she deals with trolling comments, she says“Humne sabne saree lagayi hui thi, toh ek ne likha ‘Oh aa gayi Thank You For Coming ki sati savitriyaan’. Mujhe itni hasi aayi, maine Bhumi ko bola ‘tu ne ye wala comment padha kya’. Hum itna hase. Mujhe Bhumi kehti hai ‘behen ye toh hona hi tha, inki soch kaise badle. Acha hai hum kuch naya kar rahe hai naa toh wo badi baat hai’. Toh mujhe kayi baar acha bhi lagta hai ke mai change kar rahi hu, jo mere andar change aaya hai. Agar mai ek hi styling karogi, toh mai usme hi reh jaoungi.
(One comment had read ‘Oh aa gayi Thank You For Coming Ki sati savitriyaan’. I laughed so much, I called Bhumi and asked if she read the comment. We laughed so hard. Bhumi told me “This was bound to happen, how to change their thinking. We went with something new and that’s what matters”. So, I like it when I change myself. If I style myself in one way, so I will stay restricted to that.)
She further added, “As an actor, agar mujhe acting karna hai, har character me ghusna hai toh mujhe apne dress ko bhi justice dena hai. TIFF wali meri dress itni comfortable nahi thi, but mujhe pata tha ke mai carry karungi aur achese karungi. Jab tum apne comfort zone se bahar aake kuch karte ho naa, wo hota hai kuch! Mai bahot proud feel karti hu ki wo dress maine itni elegant tarike se carry ki, baaki jisne jo bakwaas karni hai jo likhna hai, likho. Mujhe koi lena dena nahi hai. Ye toh sadiyo se chalta aa raha hai, ye tum nahi rok sakte.”
(If I want to do acting, I will have to give justice to my dresses also. My dress from TIFF was not so comfortable, but I knew I would carry it well and I did it. When you do something coming out from your comfort zone, that means a lot. I am very proud to have carried that dress with elegance. Rest, people will keep talking. You cannot stop what has been happening for so long.)
Further in the interview, Shehnaaz also spoke about being cornered at parties. Not just this, but Bhumi Pednekar spoke about being slut-shamed.
