Being a woman in itself comes with its own set of challenges. No matter how much progressive we call the world to be, women are judged and scrutinised more severely in many matters. Those judgements sometimes become stronger after becoming a mother. And when you are an actress, those judgements are much more vocal and out there. Shilpa Shetty has been there and faced it all, and in a recent conversation with Bollywood Bubble, she opened up on the same.
Shilpa Shetty on getting trolled for being a working mother
Actress Shilpa Shetty and husband Raj Kundra are parents to son Viaan Kundra and daughter Samisha Kundra. After focusing on the family for a while, Shilpa is finally returning to acting full throttle. Her next project is the slice-of-life film Sukhee, which releases this month.
During our conversation, we asked Shilpa about how she handles the trolling she faces for being a working mom. The actress gave a very inspiring answer to that. She said, “I don’t pay too much attention to what other people have to say because they are not running my life. I try to balance and be the best mom I can be. I don’t need someone else to tell me how good or bad I am. How my children turn out, will be a testament of what I have done and I think the way they are shaping up, I’m very happy.”
She also discussed her parenting style to her kids. Shilpa revealed, “I’m not a helicopter mom but I’m very aware of what my child is doing, when he is doing, what he’s eating, what he wants to do and what he should be doing. So I try my best to be there and be in the moment and enjoy it. I don’t care about what other people think and how they perceive working women. I can tell you one thing for sure, I give my children much more time than my parents have ever been able to give me. And guess what, I turned out great, so if I’m able to be this, I’m sure my children will be fine.”
Shilpa on battling body shaming
Even before the working angle, Shilpa had also faced body shaming during her post pregnancy weight gain. People commented on her not losing weight and trolled her. Talking about that, Shilpa shared, “It was my business to be glamorous and people couldn’t understand how I had not lost weight for nearly eight months after my child. It’s because I did not want to lose weight and also I didn’t pay any attention to it. But the day I decided to, I lost it in three months. But logon ka kaam hai kehna (it’s people’s job to talk). You can’t change how people think and you can’t take them too seriously.”
However, she also pointed out to the positive aspect of it and how it motivated her. She insisted, “But I’m happy that they said those things because it made me aware ‘okay ab time ho gaya (now it’s time), now I need to lose weight’. So, I don’t take things so seriously and there’s a lot you get to learn from feedback. I’m not talking about the negative trolling, I’m talking about the constructive criticism. So there’s the best of both and you have to pick and choose what you want to pay attention to.”
Shilpa is truly an inspiring force as an actress as well as a human being. She is the personification of a strong woman of today’s time. Work wise, post Sukhee, Shilpa also has her OTT debut with Sidharth Malhotra in Indian Police Force.
