Nakash Aziz on Chandrika Tandon winning a Grammy Award
When asked about Chandrika Tandon winning a Grammy Award, Nakash Aziz said, “Well I, I think it pushes you in a way that you feel like not being accepted by the world. The artist that you mentioned, Chandrika Tandon, there is one more artist, who also won an Academy award in a collaboration. I am unable to recall their name. Anoushka Shankar, Rahman sahab(A.R. Rahman), Shakti (Fusion Band) and Zakir bhaai, (late Zakhir Hus) have also won Grammys. I think it is becoming more of a common thing. Mainly not the commercial stuff that we do here, but it’s more of the classical, traditional and cultural thing that has been recognised by the West. So I think that is a big sign for us to make sure that we kind of encourage that from our country.”
He continued, “It could be very shameful that we are not able to promote that kind of music in our country, but it’s being sought after by the best. We really need to look at the great pool of talent we have and we can experiment so much. We have so many cultural strengths. It’s really a good site that slowly the West and other countries are recognising our work because you see the West is globally understood.”
Nakash Aziz compares Grammy, Oscars to Filmfare
The singer concluded, “It’s not about being appreciative of our work, it’s also about getting recognised. When we look up to a Grammy or an Oscar, why do we hope that our Filmfare can be that? Why can’t our Filmfare be what an Oscar? Why can’t we surpass it? Why do we need to look outwards and not inwards? We should set a higher standard. If our work goes global automatically even our people will be appreciated.”
