The 90s kid will understand the love and the era of the Khichdi show. It is nothing but pure love and happiness that fills our lives with happiness. Hansa’s innocence, Praful’s English, Babuji’s anger, Jayshree’s smartness, Himanshu’s stupidity. They were a part of our lives and hence, it was a special show for everyone who used to watch it back in the day. But today, we got to an interesting story on how Supriya Pathak was approached with Khichdi script and Hansa role.
During a candid chat with Bollywood Bubble, Supriya along with Aatish Kapadia and JD recalled the moment.
Aatish Kapadia and JD recalling the moment when they narrated the script
When asked how the Khichdi narration went with Surpiya, the director Aatish exclusively told us, “Supriya ji was the first person jise humne approach kiya tha. Supriya ki ke paas gaye aur humne pur padha (script)…” She then interrupted Aatish Kapadia and said, “That’s a lie,” adding that they came to meet her mother for Babuji’s mother role and she came in between. The actor then recalled, “Aise bhole se do bacche aaye the meri maa se milne.” Aatish added that after discussing the script with Supriya’s mother, he then wanted to speak to Supriya for another role.
Supriya then recalled, “Main itna hassi hu, main kabhi bhi aise script narration pe itna hassi nahi jtna main Khichdi ke first episode pe hassi thi. Aur mujhe itna khoobsurat laga tha ki hamari first narration jo tha, usme se kafi kuch badla. Par wo itna sundar tha ki main sirf hassi nahi thi, there was so much depth. The whole idea of a house, of the building being the major character that we couldn’t carry on later was so beautiful.“
Supriya Pathak on why she chose the role of Hansa
Aatish further said that he asked Supriya which role she wanted to do. Adding to this, Jamnadas Majethia said that we had not decided on who would do which roles, we just wanted to start with the narration. Recalling the day, JD said that as she was a superstar back then, we would have been happy even if she wanted Praful’s role. JD asked her what role she would like to play. They even said that Jayshree’s role is strong and they were wondering if Supriya would do that but she chose Hansa’s role.
JD recalled, “Wo pehele episode me, narration me, it was her wiseness. Hum tab shuru huye the aur unko ek vision tha aur wo khudi ek calling thi“. To this Supriya added, “Aur ek challenge bhi tha kyuki maine aisa kabhi kiya bhi nahi tha to being such a dumb person. Pehele ek serial bhi tha called Idhar Udhar, usme Ratna didi (Ratna Pathak Shah) played the dumb character and I was playing the smart one. Aur main hamesha se smart ya serious role kiya tha, toh mujhe laga Hansa is something (i felt playing) I really fell in love with her.“
