EXCLUSIVE: ‘Tom Hiddleston said Aditya Roy Kapur did a better job than him,’ shares The Night Manager director Sandeep Modi

Aditya Roy Kapur made his OTT debut earlier this year with the web series, The Night Manager. The actor was lauded for his performance in the show which is an adaptation of a novel by the same name. It had been previously adapted for a British series starring Tom Hiddleston and the Indian version is a remake of that.

The Night Manager recently came up with the part 2 of its first season on June 29, a day earlier than the release date. It has been directed by Sandeep Modi and recently, he caught up with Bollywood Bubble for an exclusive chat. After the release of the first part in February, Sandeep had met Tom Hiddleston and showed him the Indian series. In our chat, the director opened up on the same.

When asked how did it feel getting appreciated by the actor who has already done the show’s British version, the director was all smiles. He said, “I think its one thing that he is Tom Hiddleston, a big and globally renowned actor. But he has also played this part. If someone has put something in your mind, for another person to come and change it, it takes time to find acceptance for that change. But the way Tom reacted to the series and the love he gave to it, it was amazing.”

Tom Hiddleston on Aditya Roy Kapur in The Night Manager

The director also revealed the surprising compliment Tom gave for Aditya’s performance in the show. He shared, “Tom was so gracious that he said that Aditya has done a better job than him. I had to tell him that Jonathan Pyne’s backstory was different and Shaan Sengupta’s story is different. The backdrop is different, language is different so you can’t compare. But it was a big thing.”

He further added that Tom really liked the shots that were kept the same as the British series. Sandeep informed, “He picked little nuances of our series, what we changed and also what we didn’t change. He said that it was like a tribute to him. There was a shot where Shaan goes to Sri Lanka in a boat. Tom said that he remembered the same scene when he was doing it. He had to direct himself. We kept the same thing and he noticed that. He found the balance between things we changed and the ones we didn’t, really satisfying. He said that if this is the state of Indian OTT, it is rocking and asked me to recommend him more shows.”

Tom’s cameo in The Night Manager season 2

We asked Sandeep that since Tom loved the show, is there a possibility of him coming for a cameo perhaps in season 2. The director had a hopeful response to it. He revealed, “I did tell him that we should do a season 2 with Jonathan and Shaan together. Both night managers can come together. He was laughing when I said that. But here’s hoping that there is someone listening in the universe and it happens soon.”

The Night Manager Part 1 released on February 17 and Part 2 came on June 29 on Disney+ Hotstar. Apart from Aditya, the series also stars Anil Kapoor and Sobhita Dhulipala. It is directed by Sandeep and Priyanka Ghose.
