Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali’s film Rockstar starring Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri has completed 10 years on November 11. The film’s music was by AR Rahman and it became the cult classic. From Ranbir’s performance to direction to the screenplay and the music, everything about the movie was raved by the audiences. Ranbir Kapoor played the male lead in the movie. His transition from a college lover boy to becoming a popular ‘rockstar’ was applaud worthy.

Today, as Rockstar clocked 10 years, let’s talk about the reasons that make the Ranbir Kapoor starrer a cult classic.

Ranbir Kapoor

First, of course Ranbir Kapoor that makes the movie worth-watching. Ranbir plays a young college student Janardhan who becomes self-destructive rockstar Jordan. As someone tells him that one needs to have heart, fall in love to become an artist, Jordan tries to woo Heer (Nargis Fakhri) and eventually he falls for her. He sings in the college campus for fun and then in religious places and then become a popular star and performs internationally and then we see his self-destruction. From a normal college boy to a lover to becoming a rockstar to losing himself, Ranbir’s journey as Jonardan is still etched in our memories. Ranbir gave his heart and soul to this movie and it will bring tears and joy. Rockstar can be called as one of Ranbir’s best performances in his career.

Music

Imtiaz Ali’s movies are filled with soulful tracks. Same with Rockstar. As the name suggests, it was a musical saga and the music was of top notch. AR Rahman was taken on board to compose the music. Apart from composing, Rahman also lent his voice in some of the songs. Irshad Kamil penned the lyrics. It has some great songs like Nadaan Parinde, Sadda Haq, Phir Se Ud Chala that are really soothing to ears and the lyrics are soulful as well. Most of the songs are crooned by Mohit Chauhan and it is one of the best albums till date.

Cast

Apart from Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri, the movie also stars Aditi Rao Hydari as Sheena, Kumud Mishra as Khatana, Piyush Mishra as Dhingra and Shammi Kapoor. No doubt Ranbir was terrific in Rockstar, but we have to give full credits to the other characters as well. Had they been not part of Jordan’s life, his arc of the character would have not been built properly. They are equally responsible for making Rockstar a cult classic.

Imtiaz Ali

Well, how can we not mention the captain of the ship, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali whose movies deal with the complex emotion called ‘love’. Though the movie has its cons, it is one of the most profound works of Ali. Earlier, in an interview with Indian Express, he said, “It became very involving, for me personally. I got more emotionally involved in this film than any other film that I have done. I am sure the audience left feeling heavy because there was something, which was unresolved and yet something that you could feel. The film wasn’t perfect but certain feelings that it aroused were very genuine.”

References of Rumi

Rockstar has lots of Rumi’s references. “Yahaan se bahut door, ghalat aur sahi ke paar, ek maidan hai. Main wahaan milunga tujhe (Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing there is a field. I’ll meet you there…)”, this quote in the movie still gives goosebumps. Rockstar was the first film where Imtiaz touched upon Rumi’s poetry.

If you haven’t watched Rockstar yet, do watch it.
