Anushka Sharma’s take on freedom of choice
Anushka Sharma delivered a power-packed performance in 'Sultan'. However, her character in the film, a wrestler who later gives up sports to get married, gave birth to controversies. Many called it a sexist approach as it once more depicted the ever-so-repeated situation where women are often forced to quit their work to take care of their families. We were waiting to see how the fierce lady deals with it, and she slayed it. "Choosing motherhood over caring is empowering. Choosing your career over motherhood is empowering. The FREEDOM to choose is empowering," she wrote on Twitter. All hail, Anushka!
Fawad Khan’s ‘alleged’ anti-India statement
Fawad Khan has received every bit of love from Bollywood. But 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil' got him in trouble, as post Uri attack, presence of Pakistani artistes were not desired by a chunk of Indian politicians. They also had strong mass sentiments working in their favour. After a ban was put on them, Fawad allegedly left India. We heard he referred to Indians as 'small hearted people' and also stated, "Bollywood kisi ka baap nahi hai." However, nobody knew when and where he said this. Neither was anyone able to quote the sources. All we could find was a few tabloids creating insubstantial sensation, especially on social media. It was later revealed that Fawad had left India long back in July before Uri attack even happened. His wife Sadaf was pregnant and he wanted to be by her side. He later wrote a clarification about the same on his social media page. Fawad had also received major backlash from parts of both India and Pakistan after he played a homosexual in 'Kapoor & Sons'.
Yuvraj Singh-Hazel Keech wedding
Yuvraj Singh fought a long, draining, exhausting battle with cancer, before he was back to leading a normal life. And now, the handsome cricketer has tied the knot with Hazel Keech. Yuvraj and Hazel met through common friends and it took him three long years to convince the model-actress for a coffee date. We saw pictures of their beautiful wedding which unfolded in three ceremonies. Afterwards, they were off to celebrate honeymoon at an undisclosed destination. Wishing them a lot of happiness!
Karan Johar on intolerance, depression and more
2016 wasn't kind to Karan Johar. 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil', a film that he made with much love and passion, got entangled in controversies following the unfortunate terror attack in Uri. Since the attack was allegedly initiated by Pakistani terrorists, a group of radical ultra-nationalists demanded a ban on Pakistani artistes from working in Indian entertainment industry, and also films starring them. After much hassle, 'ADHM' managed to release, but Johar had to give his word that he would never cast anyone from Pakistan again, in any of his films. This was the same time when a part of internet was extremely ungraceful to him and made hurtful remarks hinting that he had an affair with Pakistani actor Fawad Khan. An exhausted and broken Johar also admitted that he suffered from depression in the past.
Kareena Kapoor embracing motherhood
Just when the year is about to end, Kareena Kapoor Khan stole the show and how! The actress who tied the knot with actor Saif Ali Khan in 2012, was blessed with a baby boy just a few days back, and named him Taimur. Since then, the internet is going gaga over Bebo and her baby. Since the first day of pregnancy, Kareena has been insanely active and also made news with some amazing maternity pieces that she wore.
Salman Khan’s rape remark
When it comes to creating controversies, Salman Khan doesn't have many competitors. During the promotions of 'Sultan' wherein he played a wrestler, Salman said he felt like a raped woman due to the gruelling physical training sessions. This of course stirred a huge controversy. Many slammed him of being insensitive towards rape victims and a gang rape victim even sued him for Rs 10 crore. Salim Khan, who always appears to save his son's back, had to come out and apologise. However, Salman said no sorry and doesn't look like he is!
Sonam Kapoor on popular perception of beauty
Sonam Kapoor had a beautiful conversation with a leading website where she said how women should stop trying to look like filmstars, because no one wakes up beautiful and perfect. The real beauty rather lies in believing on ourselves. "We’ve been taught that women need to be flawless even when our flawlessness is wildly implausible, sexy even when our sexiness is a break from plot. We’re sprinting through Jurassic Park in heels, fighting supervillains in strapless corsets, being stranded on deserted islands for days without a hint of stubble. Real female bodies are so taboo that hair-removal-cream ads show hairless legs even before the cream is applied," she wrote. The letter, which ends with suggesting us to teach our young ones that they do not lack, they're not flawed and they're as beautiful as they could be, is a heart-warming read. She even opened up about a molestation incident that she experienced in her teens on 'The Actresses Roundtable 2016'.
Twinkle Khanna, her new book and more
Our own Mrs. Funnybones is back with her new book! Titled 'The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad', it narrates the true story of a man who invented a machine to produce sanitary napkins at a low cost. Apart from that, she is back to films! However, not as an actress anymore. Twinkle has opened her production house 'Mrs. Funnybones Movies' and will support both commercial and content-oriented films. Her first production is R Balki's next starring Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar.
‘Udta Punjab’ and its brush with CBFC
'Udta Punjab' was based upon the alarmingly growing number of drug-addicts in Punjab. The expressions were honest and facts were blatant. No wonder it irked many! CBFC initially grounded the filming, saying it had too many slangs! Later, too many cuts were ordered and a bizarre demand of 'Punjab' be removed from the title was also made. However, such deliberate moves to suppress the film were finally in vain and it released with an 'A' certificate. But 'Udta Punjab' put a big question mark on CBFC's sensibility and transparency.
Vaani Kapoor’s alleged lip job gone wrong
Three years have passed after she made her Bollywood debut with 'Shuddh Desi Romance' with Sushant Singh Rajput. Vaani Kapoor is back with her second film 'Befikre' and it received mixed response. However, Vaani is in news less because of her acting and more for her face that looks drastically different than how she looked earlier. Her cheeks are broken and her lips look bizarre! We suspected she went under the knife which she obviously didn't admit. She called herself 'just one-film old and can't afford a surgery'. Weight loss and cold in Paris are apparently what made her look like that!
We swear it has been a long, eventful year! From dreamy marriages to ugly separations, from triumphant films to the disastrous ones, from enriching debates to scrappy controversies, 2016 saw it all. Picking up the best ones isn’t a cakewalk. But we have tried merging the most impactful happenings of Bollywood in 2016. Check out!
