Debut feature film
Nagesh Kukunoor used the money he made from his engineering career in the US to produce his debut feature film 'Hyderabad Blues' in 1998. It is based on a script that he wrote in Atlanta dealing with Indians returning home from the United States of America.
Work before films
Kukunoor worked as an environment specialist before trying his hands in film-making. He joined Warehouse Actor Theater in Atlanta, USA to hone his technical skills in film-making.

Nagesh Kukunoor is a highly educated man. Kukunoor attended Osmania University in Hyderabad, India and received his Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering. He moved to Atlanta, Georgia in the United States in 1988, and completed his Master's degree in Chemical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology.

As a child, Nagesh Kukunoor loved watching Telugu, Hindi, and English films in the theatres of his neighbourhood, Narayanguda.
Director Nagesh Kukunoor is well-known for giving us art cinema with content-driven plots. After his lesser known film ‘Lakshmi’ (2014) which won Mercedes Benz Audience Award, for Best Narrative at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, he is back with his latest offering ‘Dhanak’ starring child actors Hetal Gada and Krrish Chhabria, which is set to hit the theatres on Friday, June 17. This movie has already travelled to various International Film Festivals and has won multiple international awards including the Grand Prix at the Berlin Film Festival (Generation K Plus section), Best Film Award in the main category-Children’s Feature Film Competition-Cinema in Sneakers (film festival), and the Best Film Award – at the Montreal International Children’s Film Festival (FIFEM), which makes this a highly anticipated movie.
