Akshay Kumar, the psycho psychiatrist
Akshay Kumar played the role of Dr. Aditya Shrivastav, a psychiatrist who is called upon at the mahal by his friend Siddharth (played by Shiney Ahuja). Akshay’s character makes an entry just a few minutes before interval, and the actor delivered a stellar performance. He has time and again proved that he has got a great comic timing and ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ is certainly one such film where he excels in the genre. His character surely turned out to be highlight of the film.
Vidya Balan, the innocent Avni and menacing Manjulika
Vidya made a promising debut with 'Parineeta', in the year 2005. Though she had a couple of releases after that, which also went on to become commercially successful, the performer in her was somewhere subdued. Her true potential then came out in this movie. The actress played the role of Avni/Manjulika. The actress, whose role was subtle throughout the movie, changed the game in the second half, and owned the plot by the end of it. What a kickass performance!
Amazing chartbuster songs
The soundtrack of the film was composed by Pritam with the lyrics penned by Sameer and Sayeed Quadri. Before the release of the film, the promotional track ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ featuring Akshay Kumar became a rage and within no time, turned out to be a huge chartbuster. In fact, the song, which was originally meant just for promotions, was later on added in the film only owing to its popularity. Apart from this track, ‘Labon Ko Labon Pe’, ‘Allah Hafiz Keh Raha’, ‘Mere Dholna Sun/Ami Je Tomar’ and ‘Let's Rock Soniye’ were equally quite good, and perfect to the situations in the film.
The perfect scare fest
‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ was a psychological thriller with a pinch of humour, quite a unique combination! The horror sequences turned out to be the highlight of the movie. It perfectly managed to keep all at the edge of their seats, throughout. Vidya Balan as Manjulika in the climax gives nightmares to many, even now. And who can forget the humour quotient added in various scenes, by Akshay. These moments indeed made ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ a special treat for everyone who watched it.
The hooked storytelling
Priyadarshan has been known to frame light and slapstick comedies, at least in Bollywood. However, not many are aware of his notable works down South, spanning various genres. Not just that, he has helmed notable movies like 'Gardish' and 'Virasat', until came 'Hera Pheri', and the filmmaker totally diverted to comedies, at least in Bollywood. ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ yet again showed the true versatility of the director. He handled the genre with ease and rocked through the box office.
Akshay Kumar and filmmaker Priyadarshan have been a winning combination, since ages, and some of their superhit movies like ‘Hera Pheri’ and ‘Garam Masala’, are proof of the fact. Ten years back, the two teamed up for a movie that didn’t just tickle us, but gave us a scare as well. It was the psychological thriller ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’.
