Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Darr’
When you think of the movie 'Darr', the first name that comes to your mind is obviously that of Shah Rukh Khan. While the lead actor was Sunny Deol, we associate the movie with SRK's negative character who is obsessed with Kiran (Juhi Chawla). So yes, it's not always that the main lead walks away with all the glory, many a times, masses associate a movie with its negative character, more than the positive lead face. So, just like SRK's negative character walked away with the maximum praises, let's have a look at some other actors whose negative characters took the cake away from the main leads.
Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan in ‘Dhoom’ franchise
The famous 'Dhoom' franchise had the antagonists changing in every movie while the protagonist Abhishek Bachchan remained constant. The first part had John Abraham, second had Hrithik Roshan and the third part had Aamir Khan as the villain. Hrithik and Aamir's baddie act earned more brownie points than Abhishek's good cop act. Clearly, the second and the third part of the famous franchise ruled because of its antagonists.
Saif Ali Khan in Omkara
Saif Ali Khan gave an award-winning performance in the movie 'Omkara' in which he essayed the menacing role of Langda Tyagi. Even though, Ajay Devgn played the main lead, it was Saif's Langda Tyagi that went away with the maximum praises.
Akshay Kumar in Ajnabee
In Abbas-Mustan's movie 'Ajnabee', Akshay Kumar played a complete negative character against Bobby Deol's goody-shoes character. Yet, it was Akshay who walked off with all the praises despite the Bobby being the real hero.
Ranveer Singh in Padmaavat
Finally, let's talk about the newly-released movie 'Padmaavat'. Based on Sufi poet Muhammad Jaysi's poem 'Padmaavat', the movie starred Shahid Kapoor in the role of the noble King Maharawal Ratan Singh and Deepika Padukone as his wife Rani Padmavati. Ranveer Singh took on the mantle of playing the savage and barbarian Alauddin Khilji. In spite of a complete hateworthy character of Khilji, Ranveer Singh managed to take the cake.

It’s either because the actor portraying the negative character is way too popular than the lead actor or because he gave a brilliant performance or probably because his role had much more scope than the main lead. Whatever be the reasons, let’s take a quick look at those movies which were more about the villains than the heroes.
