Bollywood movies based on Ramayan
Rudraksh (2004)
Directed by Mani Shankar, Rudraksh weaves together mythology and science fiction, drawing heavily from the Ramayana. The film’s central force revolves around a mystical Rudraksha, believed to be linked to Ravana himself and hidden from the world. This is no ordinary Rudraksha—it contains powers capable of transforming humans into an evolved species with extraordinary abilities. The bearer of this Rudraksha gains access to unimaginable supernatural powers. Starring Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Bipasha Basu, Isha Koppikar and Kabir Bedi, Rudraksh was a disaster at the box office.
Raavan (2010)
Directed by Mani Ratnam, Raavan reinterprets the Ramayana with a contemporary twist. It shifts the narrative focus to Ravana’s perspective, making him the central figure. The plot draws on the Ashokavanam episode, where Ravana abducts Sita and holds her in Asokavanam, while Rama embarks on a journey to rescue her. However, in Raavan, the characters are reimagined with a fresh narrative approach that gives complexity to the antagonist’s viewpoint.
Abhishek Bachchan stars as Beera Munda, a character inspired by Ravana, portrayed with layered motivations. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s Ragini Sharma represents Sita, while Vikram’s role as Dev Pratap Sharma, an IPS officer, parallels Rama. Govinda plays Sanjeevani Kumar, a character inspired by Hanuman. Nikhil Dwivedi takes on the role of DSP Hemant Sinha, reflecting Lakshmana.
Ram Setu (2022)
Director Abhishek Sharma has been trying to build a plot since 2007 when he became aware of a court case involving Rama Setu. It was said the Ramayana is a work of fiction, which questions the existence of Rama. However, a doctor found all the evidence linking the Ram Setu to the Ramayana. They also uncover proof of Ravana’s existence in Lanka, suggesting that Ram Setu was indeed built by Rama. Ram Setu starring Akshay Kumar, Jacqueline Fernandez and Nushrratt Bharuccha was based on the bridge that was built during the Ramayan era.
RRR (2022)
RRR draws inspiration from two of India’s most revered mythological epics — the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. The film’s protagonists, Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem, though based on real-life characters, are portrayed with mythic qualities echoing their legendary namesakes. Rama Raju embodies the agility, precision, and valour of Rama from the Ramayana, while Komaram Bheem mirrors the strength and unshakable spirit of Bhima from the Mahabharata.
In a clever reversal of the Ramayana’s central theme, which revolves around Sita’s abduction, RRR places Rama Raju in captivity. Komaram Bheem, inspired by the loyalty and devotion of Hanuman, carries a message from Sita and heroically rescues Rama Raju. In addition to this, there’s a scene where Ram Charan himself dresses as Lord Ram which is a direct reference from the mythology. This narrative blend of mythology and history enriches RRR.
Adipurush (2023)
Adipurush, starring Prabhas, is an ambitious adaptation of the Hindu epic Ramayana, directed by Om Raut. Prabhas takes on the role of Lord Rama, with Kriti Sanon as Goddess Sita, Saif Ali Khan as Raavan, Sunny Singh as Laxman, and Devdatta Nage as Hanuman, bringing together a powerful ensemble to portray these iconic characters.
Om Raut, inspired by the 1992 Japanese animated classic Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama, aimed to reimagine the story with cutting-edge technology. However, the film faced significant criticism, particularly for its subpar VFX and the portrayal of certain characters, which many felt fell short of the epic’s grandeur.
