‘Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi’
'Manikarnika'- the movie is a story of courage, strength, and determination, that celebrates the extraordinary story of Rani Laxmi Bai, a symbol of heroism in India. The titular role is played by actress Kangana Ranaut. Produced by Zee Studios, in association with Kamal Jain, 'Manikarnika:The Queen of Jhansi' that is helmed by Krish, is slated to release on January 25, 2019.
‘Kesari’
Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra play the lead roles in the period drama based on the 1897 Battle of Saragarhi. It tells the story of Havildar Ishar Singh, who participates in the Battle of Saragarhi, in which an army of 21 Sikhs fought against 10,000 Afghans in 1897. The film is directed by Anurag Singh and produced by Karan Johar in collaboration with Akshay Kumar and will hit screens in March 2019.
‘Thugs Of Hindostan’
'Thugs Of Hindostan' is is an upcoming 2018 Indian epic Hindi-language action-adventure film written and directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya. It is based on Philip Meadows Taylor's 1839 novel Confessions of a Thug, and stars Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh in pivotal roles and is reportedly set. The film will release around Diwali this year.
‘Kalank’
The Karan Johar produced period drama features an ensemble cast including Madhuri Dixit, Sonakshi Sinha, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Sanjay Dutt. The Abhishek Varman directed film that is set against the backdrop of the partition, is slated for release on 19 April, 2019.
‘Panipat’
Ashutosh Gowariker directs the historical period drama featuring Arjun Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Sanjay Dutt. The film is about The Third Battle of Panipat which was fought between Marathas and Afghans in 1761. Arjun plays the Maratha army’s leader Sadashivrao Bhau, whereas Sanjay will essay the main antagonist — Ahmad Shah Durrani, who led the Afghans to victory. It will arrive in theaters on 6 December, 2019.
Taanaji’
Ajay Devgn plays the lead role in the film on the life of the Maratha warrior Subedar Taanaji Malusare, who fought alongside Chatrapathi Shivaji Maharaj. Directed by Marathi filmmaker Om Raut, the high budget venture might also star Kajol and Saif Ali Khan in pivotal roles. The movie will hit the screens in 2019.
Takht
Karan Johar directs the period drama about two warring brothers set during the Mughal era. The film starring Anil Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Ranveer Singh, Janhvi Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal and Bhumi Pednekar has only been announced earlier this month. It is inspired from the Mughal era.
Period drama is a genre that is slowly and steadily on the rise in Bollywood, this has taken place after the game-changing results that ‘Padmaavat‘ yielded at the box office. Now, more and more filmmakers are making movies based on the subject.
