The Midas touch, lost?
Over the last two years, some of the most revered and top filmmakers have not managed to deliver amazingly crafted movies like their predecessors. Their recent mediocre outings haven't lived up to the extreme expectations of the audiences and critics alike. So, that raises a pertinent question as to whether these directors are losing out on their Midas touch?
Neeraj Pandey
Filmmaker Neeraj Pandey has given us some of the best thrillers namely 'A Wednesday', 'Special 26', 'Baby'. However, his latest outing 'Aiyaary' which boasted of an ensemble cast didn't live up to the expectations. The movie's storyline was too jumbled up and stretched which actually left us wondering if it's the same Neeraj Pandey. Sadly, the box office results of the movie are also disappointing.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali
SLB's vision is exemplary and grand and his movies depict that in the minutest forms. Be it 'Devdas', 'Ram Leela' or 'Bajirao Mastani', the director is synonymous for weaving magic onscreen in visually appealing forms. This time too, he depicted a grand extravaganza in the form of 'Padmaavat', but sadly, the movie didn't manage to fulfill the sky-high expectations. Even though, it entered the Rs 200 crore club, critics didn't appreciate the movie in entirety and a certain section of audiences thought the portrayal wasn't as impactful. Comparisons were drawn with his earlier movies and this one turned out to be less impressive amongst them. So, that raises a question mark, as to Bhansali slowly fading away from his magic touch? We so hope not!
Imtiaz Ali
Director Imtiaz Ali is known to churn out meaningful love stories that leave a lasting impression. Best examples being 'Jab We Met', 'Love Aaj Kal', 'Rockstar' and 'Highway'. Even 'Tamasha' was appreciated although it didn't set the cash registers ringing. However, his last outing 'Jab Harry Met Sejal' which starred Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma in lead roles failed to garner positive reactions. This raises concerns in our minds.
Kabir Khan
Filmmaker Kabir Khan has helmed projects like 'New York', 'Ek Tha Tiger' and 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' which have not just been high on commercial aspect but also earned appreciation for the storyline. His jodi with Salman Khan has always been successful, however, their last outing together 'Tubelight' failed to impress. Prior to it, his movie 'Phantom' too failed miserably. So we wonder if the director has indeed lost his Midas touch.
Abbas Mustan
Filmmaker duo Abbas-Mustan are famous for helming stylish suspense movies. After directing movies like 'Khiladi', 'Baazigar' and 'Race' franchise, the duo gave us a movie like 'Machine', which was a big-time disaster. We really don't know what were they thinking when they made the movie. Anyways, we hope they regain their creative skills and come up with something interesting.
Our filmmakers who hold the reigns of a project need to consistently deliver creative ventures. But, just the way we sometimes suffer from a creative block, the same is the case for our filmmakers. It ain’t easy to deliver splendid content consistently, and this is what seems to be the case for some of them.
