‘Indu Sarkar’
Madhur Bhandarkar's 'Indu Sarkar' is based on the period of emergency (1975-1977). Although the makers claim it to be majorly a work of fiction, the story has evident references to the Gandhi family and their internal crisis during the time of emergency.
‘Baadshaho’
'Baadshaho' is an upcoming thriller and the makers are calling it a 'period heist action thriller film'. It revolves around Indira Gandhi's order to take over Rajasthan's Jaigarh Fort.
‘Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi’
Directed by Sudhir Mishra, 'Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi' tells the story of three young souls, on the backdrop of emergency. As the country is undergoing enormous political and social changes, so do their lives.
‘Nasbandi’
Directed by IS Johar, the 1978 comedy film starred duplicates of all the popular actors of that time. It is a humorous take on the sterilisation drive undertaken by Indira Gandhi's Government. All the characters in the film look for sterilisation cases. It was a successful political spoof.
‘Kissa Kursi Ka’
This 1977 film directed by Amrit Nahata was a satirical take on the 1975 Emergency announced by Indira Gandhi. Nahata, who was a Member of Parliament on Behalf of Indian National Congress, left the political party after emergency. It revolved around an evil politician trying to win over the helpless public. It was banned by the Congress Government for efforts of ridiculing the political party.
25th June, 2017. Just a date? No. 42 years back on this date, the face of Indian politics changed forever as the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi issued emergency after being unable to take part in parliament proceedings. An emergency signified that India’s interest and sovereignty were in great danger and the usual rule of law would not be sufficient to safeguard the country. Gandhi’s admirers lauded this, while the opposition and thousands of countrymen burst out in rage. This followed by the most chaotic 21 months, with fundamental rights and freedom of press being curbed and lives of laymen turning murky for an indefinite period.
