Javed Akhtar, an Indian poet, lyricist and screenwriter, has written scores of Bollywood’s most beautiful songs. The legendary poet Javed Akhtar has turned 74 today. His poetry and songs are filled with emotions. It has been over a decade now that he wrote songs for Bollywood but his songs always ended up in our playlists.

Javed Akhtar in his five decades long (more than that) career has penned down several soulful songs. He wrote songs ranging from romantic to haunting, from hope to heart-wrenching.  As the legendary screenwriter tuned 74 today, we remember some of the best songs written by him.

1. ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha’: ‘1942 A Love Story’

‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga’ song was written by Javed Akhtar for the film ‘1942: A Love Story’ which starred Anil Kapoor, Manisha Koirala, Jackie Shroff and Anupam Kher in the lead roles. It is to be noted that this is the first Indian film in which Dolby Stereo was used.

2. In Lamho Ke Daaman Mein: Jodha Akhbar

‘In Lamho Ke Daaman Mein’ song was written for the film ‘Jodha Akbar’. The film was released in the year 2008 and starred Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the lead roles. The Indian historical romance film was co-written, produced and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker.

3. ‘Do Pal Ruka’: ‘Veer Zara’

‘Do Pal’ Song is not only one of the beautiful songs penned by Javed Akhtar, it is also touted to be the best song of Shah Rukh Khan. It was written for a romantic drama – ‘Veer Zara’ – which featured Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta in lead roles.

4. ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’: ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’

Javed has written many songs for Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s films. Including Nikkhil Advani’s romantic drama film ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’, which had Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Jaya Bachchan and Preity Zinta in the lead roles.

5. ‘Tumhi Dekho Naa’: ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’

The film ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’ was released in the year 2006. It was directed by filmmaker Karan Johar and produced under the Dharma Productions banner. The film featured Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukerji and Kirron Kher in the lead roles.

6. ‘Tumko Paya Hai Toh Jaise Khoya Hun’: ‘Om Shanti Om’

‘Om Shanti Om’ is a romantic film directed by Farah Khan with Mayuri Puri and Mushtaq Sheikh. It stars Shah Rukh and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles. The soundtrack of ‘Tumko Paya Hai Toh Jaise Khoya Hun’ was composed by Vishal–Shekhar while its lyrics were written by Javed Akhtar.

7. Tum Ho Toh: Rock On

‘Rock On’ is an Indian rock musical drama that was released in 2008. Notably, Farhan Akhtar and Prachi Desai made their acting debut in Bollywood with this film. The title song’s lyrics were written by legendary lyricist Javed Akhtar. According to the Indian trade website Box Office India, more than 12,00,000 units of the song was sold.

8. ‘Yeh Jo Desh Hai Tera’: ‘Swades’

The song was written for the film ‘Swades’ starring Shah Rukh Khan, Gayatri Joshi and Kishori Ballal in the lead roles. The film was written, produced and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. The music and background score was composed by veteran singer A.R. Rahman while its lyrics were written by Javed Akhtar.

9. ‘Jaane Kyu Log Pyaar Karte Hain’: ‘Dil Chahta Hai’

‘Dil Chahta Hai’ is an Indian comedy film starring Aamir Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta in the lead roles. It is the first film written by Farhan Akhtar. Its title track was featured in the BBC Asian Network’s Top 40 Soundtracks of All Time list and Planetbollywood’s 100 Greatest Bollywood Soundtracks list. All the lyrics were written by Javed Akhtar.

10. ‘Yeh Kahaan Aa Gaye Hum’: ‘Silsila’

The film ‘Silsila’ is a romantic film directed by Yash Chopra in 1981. The film features Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Rekha and Sanjeev Kumar in the lead roles. ‘Yeh Kahaan Aa Gaye Hum’ is among the most popular songs written by Javed Akhtar in his decade-old career.

Notably, Javed Akhtar is a recipient of the third and fourth highest civilian awards – Padma Shri (1999) and Padma Bhushan (2007) respectively.
