 Tanhaji The Unsung Warrior

Set in the 17th century, it revolves around the brave Maratha Sardar Tanaji’s attempts to recapture the Kondhana fortress from the Mughal Sardar Udaybhan Singh Rathore. Ajay Devgn as Tanhaji the brave Maratha Sardar was truly a force to be reckoned with. Saif Ali Khan as Udaybhan was quite fearsome. Kajol too looked dazzling as Tanhaji’s wife. The way Tanhaji portrayed the characters and the rich heritage of Marathas was a blessing for the eyes.

This is another visual delight by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Bajirao Mastani is about Maratha Peshwa Bajirao (Ranvir and his relationship with his second wife, Mastani (Deepika Padukone). Priyanka Chopra as Bajirao’s first wife Kashibai left a mark on the minds of the audience. Deepika, Ranvir and Priyanka together were the perfect trio to bring alive the historical characters.

Manikarnika The Queen Of Jhansi

Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi is based on the life of Rani Lakshmi Bai, a leading figure of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Aptly played by Kangana Ranaut the movie was a perfect ode to the freedom fighter. The huge sets and the amazing navwaris with perfectly matched jewellery restricted to Maharashtrian styles—like the moti haar and the pohe haar were a visual delight.

Asoka

Shahrukh Khan played the role of Asoka the 3rd century BCE emperor of the Maurya Dynasty. Kareena Kapoor as Princess Kaurwaki of Kalinga was a perfect foil to SRK’s rough and tough character. Together they brought alive the Mauryan dynasty and its many intrigues. The film was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival with rave reviews.

Mughal E Azam

Probably the most famous Bollywood period drama of all time, Mughal-E-Azam takes place during the reign of Akbar (Prithviraj Kapoor). It is all about Akbar’s son Salim(Dilip Kumar) and his love for a court dancer Anarkali(Madhubala). The love has to face the wrath of the Mughal Emperor. It is celebrated today as one of the finest Hindi films ever made.
