Gully Boy
Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt's upcoming film 'Gully Boy' helmed by Zoya Akhtar dwells in the lives of those who are not that priviledged. Roaming through the narrow lanes of Dharavi slum, Alia and Ranveer's hand-to-mouth existence in 'Gully Boy', makes the core of the film. The makers are doing their best to make it look as real as possible as they are shooting at the real locations. Pictures of Alia and Ranveer shooting in the not-so-very glamorous lanes of Dharavi have already made it to the internet. But this is not the first time that Bollywood has gone beyond the glorified Taj Hotel and famous Mehbood studios, and fringed into the dustier lanes of Mumbai. Here are the list of such films.
Black Friday
Anurag Kashyap's film that covered the dreaded 1993 Mumbai Bomb Blasts and its aftermath was mostly shot in real locations. It did have scenes wherein we witness the cat and mouse chase between police and the terrorists amidst the twisted lanes of Dharavi.
Dhobi Ghat
Kiran Rao's 'Dhobi Ghat' was all about a girl from a wealthy family falling in love with a Dhobi (laundry man). The film was extensively shot in Dhobi Ghat area that falls in Mahalaxmi area.
Salaam Bombay
Mira Nair's 'Salaam Bombay' was all about street kids from the red-light district of Mumbai. Shot in the by-lanes of Kamathipura, Mira picked up kids from streets for her docudrama that highlighted the worse phase of prostitution in India.
Dharavi
Om Puri, Shabana Azmi, Madhuri Dixit and Anil Kapoor-starrer 'Dharavi' helmed by Sudhir Mishra was about a man from Mumbai's biggest slum Dharavi, aspiring to be a big businessman. Life of a man from slum is not easy, and 'Dharavi' was all about the struggle. It was shoot in real locations of the slum.
Aamir
Rajiv Khandelwal's 'Aamir' was an impactful film that narrated the story of a man whose family gets kidnapped. He then becomes the medium to conduct bomb blasts in Mumbai in the name of religion. The film was shot in the lanes of Bhendi Bazaar and streets of Dongri.
Bhootnath Returns
A song in this Amitabh Bachchan-starrer was shot in Dharavi.
Slumdog Millionaire
How can we forget the film that got us Oscars. This Danny Boyle drama was all about a boy from the slums going to win the famous 'Kaun Banega Crorepati'. It beautiful captured the lives of those underprivileged for whom observation is the key to success. It was extensively shot in Dharavi slum.
