For any 90s kid, this is a true fact that we have learnt all about love from how Karan Johar has showed it in his films. The filmmaker will always be a love expert for this generation. But if you have such a big title to live up to, you have to evolve with time. And while in real life, Karan has been the coolest love guru, his work too has reflected that. From Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Khaani, his love language has truly evolved. And here’s a look at how he has done that.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Karan made his directorial debut with this Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji starrer. While we all loved the college life that he showed in the film we also learned a lot about love. The film taught us that ‘pyaar dosti hai’. And honestly, who amongst us hasn’t thought at least once that our best friend might be our soulmate?
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham
If Karan’s first film taught that love is friendship, with this one he showed that love for family is supreme. The filmmaker pulled a casting coup with Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, SRK, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor. And even today, the film is etched in the minds of everyone as it became a cult classic over the years.
Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna
With his third directorial, Karan took a big risk. He brought forward the concept of infidelity with KANK and showed a modern day relationship. During its release, it was seen as way ahead of its time. But the film did show that it isn’t all black and white when it comes to love. Sometimes your true love of life might not be the person next to you. It might take some wrong decisions to reach the right one. And over time, the audiences have understood the film and loved it all the more.
My Name Is Khan
Until 2010, Karan had portrayed love where the individual’s dilemma played the poignant part in any love story. With My Name Is Khan, he tackled the issue of love happening beyond the shackles of social taboos and norms. An inter-religion marriage that leads to a tragic outcome, Karan showed this important issue with utmost sensitivity. He showed that he is not all about glitz and glam but substance as well.
Student Of The Year
Love is not all about hunky-dory scenarios, there is competition, jealousy, confusion and a lot more. By launching 3 new faces- Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra, the filmmaker brought a Gen-Z love story with a complete new take on romance. The film not only launched 3 careers of now superstars but showed Karan’s evolution in love.
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
Love is a complicated feeling and sometimes it isn’t even reciprocated. ‘Ek tarfa pyaar ki taakat’ and friendzoning, these are concepts that we had heard about, but Karan showed it on the big screen with a heart-wrenching story. Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan portrayed a beautiful story of love, friendship and rebound relationships. Sometimes love isn’t perfect but that is its beauty, that is what ADHM showed.
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani
Karan is returning on the director’s chair after 7 years with Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani and this Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh starrer has hit the right chord from the word go. This seems to be a blend of everything that Karan has ever shown in his films, love, friendship, heartbreak and family. The expectations from Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani are sky high and the film seems to be living up to it. This one is going to be a winner for sure.
