Rekha on being in love with Amitabh Bachchan: On ‘Rendezvous with Simi Garewal’, Rekha was asked if she was ever in love with Amitabh Bachchan. The veteran actress had said, “Absolutely. Duh, that’s a dumb question. I have yet to come across a single man, woman, child who can help but fall completely, passionately, insanely, desperately, hopelessly in love with him. So, why I should I be singled out? What do I deny? I am in love with him? Of course, I am. Duniye bhar ka love aap le lijiyega and add some more – I feel that for that person. Bottomline.” Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan have worked together in movies like Silsila, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, and Ganga Ki Saugand.
Why can’t I marry a woman?: On the chat show, Simi asked Rekha if she would marry again and she had replied saying, “You mean with a man?” To which, Simi said, “Well, not a woman obviously.” Rekha responded saying, “Why not? In my mind, I am married to myself, my profession and my loved ones. I am not a cynical person.” In 1990, Rekha married industrialist Mukesh Agarwal. Sadly, the marriage ended seven months later when he died by suicide.
Rekha on not having kids: In an old interview, Rekha had opened up about not having kids. She had said, “I do not miss children. Even if I find the ultimate man to have babies with, it would be very unfair to my priorities. Because if I have a baby, I won’t be able to focus on anything else.”
Jaya Bachchan cried after watching Rekha’s love scenes with Big B: Rekha once claimed that she saw Big B’s wife, actor Jaya Bachchan, crying as she watched Muqaddar Ka Sikandar. The veteran actress had said, “Once, I was looking at the whole Bachchan family through the projection room when they came to see the trial show of Muqaddar Ka Sidandar. Jaya was sitting in the front row and he and his parents were in the row behind her. They couldn’t see her clearly as I could. And during our love scenes, I could see tears pouring down her face.” Jaya married Big B in 1973. They have two children – Shweta Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan.”
On being labelled ugly duckling: The veteran actress once opened up about the criticism she faced in Bollywood. She had said, “I was called the ‘Ugly Duckling’ of Hindi films because of my dark complexion and South Indian features. I used to feel deeply hurt when people compared me with the leading heroines of the time and said I was no match for them. I was determined to make it big on sheer merit.”
