Sunil and Nargis Dutt’s son Sanjay Dutt’s life has been a roller-coaster ride. He is one of the most controversial actors of Bollywood who has always been embroiled either in legal battles or facing rumours regarding his personal life. His overtly interesting life was recently translated on celluloid as ‘Sanju’ which was helmed by Rajkumar Hirani, one of the most celebrated filmmakers of Bollywood.
However, the film refrained from throwing light on Sanjay Dutt’s various affairs. According to Yasser Usman’s book-‘Sanjay Dutt: The Crazy Untold Story of Bollywood’s Bad Boy’, rumours of Sanjay’s affair with his co-star, Madhuri Dixit had taken the nation by storm. Reportedly Sanjay Dutt (who was already married to Richa Sharma) fell madly in love with Madhuri to an extent that he was even ready to divorce his wife Richa. According to ‘Sahibaan'(1993) director Ramesh Talwar, Sanjay Dutt would always keep following Madhuri around the set and would keep whispering “I love you” to her, totally ignoring the fact that there were others around.
When rumours of Sanjay-Madhuri’s alleged affair reached Richa, (who was getting her Cancer treated in New York at that time) she was heartbroken of course. But she desperately wanted to save her marriage. She was responding very well to the treatment and wanted to return back to India. However, Sanjay Dutt wasn’t keen on saving his marriage.
After being cured of Cancer, Richa returned to India after three years in 1992.

However upon her arrival in India Sanjay Dutt didn’t even bother to pick her up from the airport. Despite, Richa calling him twice Sanjay blatantly ignored both his wife Richa and their daughter Trishala.
In an interview that Richa Sharma’s sister Ena gave to CineBlitz, while talking about Madhuri she was quoted as “Madhuri is so inhuman…I mean Madhuri can get any man she wants. How can she go for a man who’s behaved in such a way with his wife?…I know they are good friends because he’s called her from our house. And he does talk to her brother and her sister here. But we never looked at it as if “okay the guy’s involved with Madhuri”. We’re very open, we’ve always given Sanjay his space.”

Richa who was madly in love with Sanjay fought to save her marriage but in early 1993, he filed for divorce. Thereafter the custody battle for their daughter Trishala began which made things worse between the two families. Richa was left heartbroken and her Cancer resurfaced in the same year.
Richa who was diagnosed with a brain tumour later died at her parent’s house in New York on December 10, 1996.
