The society has never been so welcoming to the idea of a woman and her relationship to a person with a higher or similar financial status as of her, despite her personal accomplishments. However, there is no name calling or shaming when a man, who is not so accomplished is in a relationship with a woman who has a higher financial status than of him. Over the years, there have been many Bollywood actresses who have faced severe backlash for being in love and have been called ‘gold diggers’.

Of late, actor Sushmita Sen faced criticism on the internet, when her relationship with businessman Lalit Modi made it to the headlines. She even went on to hit back at the trolls on social media.

Sushmita Sen got severely trolled after Lalit Modi made their romance social media official. Many went on to call the Aarya actress a ‘gold digger’ for being in love with someone who is 12 years older. Sushmita reacted with a befitting reply. She clapped back at trolls and wrote, “The so called intellectuals with their idiosyncrasies….the ignorant with their cheap & at times funny gossip The friends I never had & the acquaintances I’ve never met….all sharing their grand opinions & deep knowledge of my life & character…monetising the ‘Gold Digger’ all the way!!! Ah these geniuses!!! I dig deeper than Gold…and I’ve always (famously) preferred Diamonds!! And yes I still buy them myself!!! I love the all heart support my well wishers & loved ones continue to extend. Please know, your Sush is ABSOLUTELY fine.. cause I’ve never lived on the transient borrowed light of approval & applause. I am the Sun….perfectly Centred in my being & my conscience!!”

Malaika Arora

Malaika Arora and her ex-husband Arbaaz Khan have been cordial after their divorce and are loved for how beautifully they co-parent their son, Arhaan Khan. However, when they had decided to part ways in 2017, Malaika was severely trolled. A social media troll slammed Arora for ‘feeding off her husband’s money’ as rumours surfaced that she was receiving a meaty alimony. One user made a comment on Malaika’s post and wrote, “Her life now is all about wearing short clothes, going to gym or salon, enjoying the vacation. Do u seriously have any work… Or just feeding urself on the husband’s money?” Arora did not hold back. She hit back at the troll and wrote, “I do not indulge in such conversation coz it’s below my dignity, but I jus had to @feelgoodfabric coz u certainly got to get ur damn facts right before spewing shit n slagging me off when u know nothing bout me. except sit n pass judgement on other people’s life. i seriously suggest u find something to do with ur time coz u clearly have nothing better to do in life.”

Rhea Chakraborty

Rhea Chakraborty was in the news after the sudden and untimely death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput in June 2020. She had made their relationship official on social media, after SSR’s demise. Back then, the actress got mercilessly trolled. She was called names like ‘witch’ and ‘gold digger’. Reportedly, Rhea was blamed for living off Sushant’s money. Later, in an interview with India Today, Chakraborty addressed the tags. She even revealed how she was called ‘Vishkanya’, someone who pracitised black magic. Despite the backlash and trolling, Chakraborty maintain that she never regretted loving Sushant.

Samantha Ruth Prabhu, who is reportedly set to make her Bollywood debut soon had announced her separation with Naga Chaitanya last year. When the news broke out, fans of the former couple were left in shock. Back then, netizens trolled Samantha for demanding a massive sum of alimony in the divorce. Taking to Twitter, one user wrote, “@Samanthaprabhu2 is a divorced ruined second-hand item who has 50 crores tax-free money robbed from a gentleman!” The Family Man 2 actress replied to the troll and hit back with a befitting answer. She simply replied with dignity and grace and wrote, “God bless your soul.”
