Fact 1- Struggling days!
When he arrived in Mumbai, he was a struggler, and to make ends meet, he sold off his precious stamp collection for Rs 30. In fact, such was his condition that he shared a room in a chawl with three other people, and a bathroom with 20 people.
Fact 2 – Strong ambitions!
He had ambitions of joining the Royal Indian Navy of the British Armed Forces just like his contemporary Raj Kapoor. But, both got rejected.
Fact 3 – Never went for funerals!
He never went for funerals and the only time he cried a lot was when his mother died and when his brother Vijay Anand passed away.
Fact 4 – Fetish for jackets!
He had a fetish for jackets and enviably owned 800 of those.
Fact 5 – Nobody to play his sister on screen
It was said that practically no actress was interested in essaying the role of his sister on screen. The role of Jasbir in 'Hare Ram Hare Krishna' was rejected by several actresses before Zeenat Aman came on-board.
Fact 6 – First crush!
His first crush happened when he was studying in a Lahore college, where he was attracted to Usha Chopra, an Anglo-Indian girl who was an undergraduate in the same college.
Fact 7 – When he was mistaken to be a taxi driver!
During the shooting of his movie 'Taxi Driver', he was actually mistaken to be one. It so happened that after he was done offloading a passenger in front of The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, a foreigner quickly got into his cab and asked him to drop him to the Red Light area. When Dev Anand revealed his identity, the man was struck by wonder and took some seconds to absorb what had just happened.
Fact 8 – Discreet marriage!
He settled down with the leading lady of his movie 'Taxi Driver', Kalpana Kartik while working on the movie. They went for a discreet court marriage and not an extravagant one.
Fact 9 – Black suit not allowed!
He was a sensation and had the women swooning over him, so post the success of his movie 'Kala Pani', he was asked not to wear black suit in public as women used to literally go crazy and even jump from buildings on seeing him in a black suit.
Fact 10 – Sad love story!
Dev Anand had saved his co-star Suraiyya from a capsized boat and ended up falling in love with her. He even proposed to her with a diamond ring, but Suraiyya's maternal grandfather was against this inter-religious affair and hence, she remained unmarried all her life.
Remembering Dev Anand, we recollect his evergreen charm which could weaken any girl in her knees. The multi-talented person was an actor, filmmaker, and producer, who gave us roles we remember to date. Though he is no longer amongst us, let’s go back in time, on his birthday.
