This year saw many underrated movies that had great content but underperformed at the box-office. A few gems had escaped the attention. Many films like ‘Gully Boy’, ‘Article 15’, and ‘Dream Girl’ among others made people stand up and notice them while many of the films escaped without the applause they discovered. From ‘Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota’ to ‘Hamid’ and ‘Sonchiriya’, we have a list of movies that are gems contentwise but failed to get the attention of the audience. These fascinating films reworked the understanding of quintessential Hindi films and challenged society’s norms.

Underrated Bollywood movies of 2019

‘Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota’

Cast: Abhimanyu Dassani, Radhika Madan, Gulshan Devaiah, Jimit Trivedi and Mahesh Manjrekar

‘Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota’ was the debut of Abhimanyu Dassani. It also had Radhika Madan, Gulshan Devaiah, Jimit Trivedi and Mahesh Manjrekar in key roles. Directed by Vasan Bala, the movie got critical acclaim in festivals like Toronto International Film Festival and MAMI Film Festival. The story was about Surya played by Abhimanyu Dassani, who was born with a rare condition of congenital insensitivity to pain. It had a unique concept but was underrated.

‘The Sky Is Pink’

Cast: Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Akhtar, Zaira Wasim and Rohit Saraf

Directed by Shonali Bose, ‘The Sky Is Pink’ was the real-life story of inspirational speaker Aisha Chaudhary and her parents. The movie was a mixture of fun, laughter, tears and a lot more. This movie was also highly appreciated in the international film festivals but when it released at the box-office, it didn’t receive a good response. Before the year ends, you should definitely watch this movie.

‘Sonchiriya’

Cast: Sushant Singh Rajput, Bhumi Pednekar, Manoj Bajpayee and Ranveer Shorey

‘Sonchiriya’ was co-written and directed by Abhishek Chaubey. The movie was loved by critics and a section of the audience but it failed to spell its magic at the box-office. The dacoit drama that was set in Chambal tells the story of a group of dacoits and their psyche. You shouldn’t give this film a miss.

‘Hamid’

Cast: Rasika Dugal, Vikas Kumar and Talha Arshad Reshi

Directed by Aijaz Khan, the movie is about a seven-year-old Hamid, who comes to know that 786 is God’s number and he is told that his father stays with Allah, and Hamid dials 786. The movie is about hope and it got positive reviews from the critics. Don’t give a miss to this movie before the year ends.

‘The Tashkent Files’

Cast: Shweta Basu Prasad, Naseeruddin Shah, Mithun Chakraborty, Pallavi Joshi, Pankaj Tripathi and Mandira Bedi

This is an Indian Hindi-language conspiracy thriller film about the death of former Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. It was directed by Vivek Agnihotri. It got unfavorable reviews by some of the critics but you should definitely watch this.

‘Gone Kesh’

Cast: Shweta Tripathi, Jitendra Kumar, Vipin Sharma, Deepika Amin and Brijendra Kala

Many months before Ayushmann Khurrana took on the baton of self-love and self-worth, Shweta Tripathi starred in ‘Gone Kesh’, a film that takes on a similar theme. In an ignorant society, gorgeous hair is a yardstick of beauty. A heartfelt slice of life film, it takes the audience on a journey to find what really matters and derive self-worth from their own good deeds.

‘Section 375’

Cast: Akshaye Khanna, Richa Chadha and Meera Chopra

So what really constitutes as rape is a question this nation needs to address on priority. But on screen, the Akshaye Khanna and Richa Chadha starrer explores the subject with the balance and gumption that it deserved. Exploring emotional manipulation behind the rape and how such cases are fought out in Court, the film treads carefully between two solid narratives finding its own ground on what needs to change in rape laws of India.
