Fondly known as Shammi Aunty, her first movie as a solo heroine was 'Malhar' in the year 1951. Even though the movie didn't do well at the box office, her role got noticed.

Bollywood career kicks off!

Post that, she got a role in the Dilip Kumar-starrer 'Sangdil' and ever since, there has been no looking back for the actress.

Filmography!

She worked in various movies like 'Ilzam', 'Pehli Jhalak', 'Bandish', 'Azaad', 'Coolie No 1', 'Khuda Gawah', 'Hum', 'Arth', 'The Burning Train' and many others.

Television career!

She also worked in many TV series like 'Dekh Bhai Dekh', 'Zabaan Sambhal Ke', 'Shriman Shrimati', 'Kabhi Yeh Kabhi Woh' and 'Filmi Chakkar'.

Dark phase and a subsequent comeback!

After 2002, movie offers stopped coming and then in 2013, she made a comeback with the film 'Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi'.

Personal life!

On the personal front, she was married to film producer-director Sultan Ahmed for seven years but they got divorced eventually.
