Actor-activist Vira Sathidar passed away due to Covid-19 complications on Tuesday. He was known for featuring in the National Award-winning film Court. Director of Court Chaitanya Tamhane confirmed the news as he revealed that Sathidar had tested positive for Covid-19 and his condition was quite serious. The actor was on the ventilator and he passed away in the wee hours on Tuesday.
Tamhane told PTI, “It’s true. He passed away at around 3 AM in the hospital. He had COVID-19 and was on ventilator. It’s an extremely unfortunate news. It is yet to sink in.” The director added, “He was not only an actor, activist and a poet but also one of the nicest human beings I’ve met. I still can’t process it. He was a fantastic person and I can now only think of the time we spent making Court.”
Vira was in his earlier sixties and he was admitted to a city hospital after he contracted the deadly virus. Vira Sathidar was widely applauded for his role as a protest singer Narayan Kamble in Court who was accused of encouraging a manhole worker to commit suicide.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Sathidar’s family. May his soul rest in peace.
