SS Rajamouli might have released his magnum opus RRR last year as a pan-Indian film, but the roar of the film has been heard globally. It has become one of the most hyped and loved Indian film internationally, with many big names across the world praising RRR ever since it had its digital release. It has been around a year since the film’s release but the buzz around it seems to just grow every day. With the international award season in full swing, RRR has garnered a lot of nominations across major award shows, and SS Rajamouli accepted his award for Best Director at New York Film Critics Circle Awards on Wednesday.
The winners for the New York Film Critics Circle Awards were announced in December 2022 where SS Rajamouli got the Best Director Award for RRR. On Wednesday, the winners gala dinner was held in the Big Apple where the filmmaker accepted his award on stage in presence of many global celebrities. Rajamouli wore a traditional blue kurta pajama, complete with a shawl, and as he accepted his award, he delivered a heartfelt speech, which was full of emotions, humour and nostalgia.

In his speech, the RRR director asserted that this win was not just for the film, but meant much more. He said, “You didn’t just honour my cast and crew, you made a lot of people take notice of a small film field in the South of India.” He also shared his movie watching experience of Terminator 2 and how it influenced his filmmaking style. Going down memory lane, he revisited the interval point of Terminator 2 when he watched the movie and recalled the audience’s reaction at that time. He shared, “It is pure joy of awe. You can look at the faces and say what they were thinking. It is just like ‘what in the hell did we just witness’. That is exactly what I want to give to my audiences. That look of pure joy when they watch my films.”
The director went on to state that while in India the audience screams and shouts in theatres when they enjoy a movie, he saw it for the first time in West too with his film. He recounted, “With RRR, I saw the same kind of reception in the West. Whether it is in New York, LA or Chicago, when I went, initially I thought most of them were Indians. But when I personally went there and saw them, 90 per cent of them were non-Indians and they were reacting the same way Indians did.”
RRR is achieving new milestones every day even after a year. The film is nominated in two categories at the upcoming Golden Globes and has garnered nods at many other international award shows as well including Critics Choice Awards and Hollywood Critics Association Awards. RRR also made to the shortlist of Oscars 2023 with Naatu Naatu in the Original song category, and is a favourite to achieve nods in some other categories too when the final nomination list is announced.
