Veteran singer Sandhya Mukherjee, who refused Padma Shri, passes away at 90

Legendary Bengali singer Sandhya Mukherjee passed away after she suffered a massive cardiac arrest. Mukherjee breathed her last on Tuesday, February 15. She was 90 years old.

Hospital sources have told PTI that Sandhya Mukherjee suffered a massive cardiac post which she passed away. Multiple attempts were made to revive her but to no avail.

The legendary singer was hospitalised in the last week of January. She was admitted because the singer needed medical attention due to Covid-19 related complications.

Sandhya Mukherjee was recently making headlines as she refused to accept the Padma Shri Award. Soumi Sengupta, daughter of the veteran singer, talking about why her mother turned down the award, said, “To confer a Padma Shri to a legend like her at the age of 90 is extremely demeaning. There isn’t any politics behind it. She is beyond any politics. She felt insulted, that’s all.”

After Lata Mangeshkar, the nation has lost another legendary singer. She was called one of the sweetest voices in the 60s and 70s. Sandhya has sung thousands of songs in Bengali language and dozens in other languages.
