Chinese-Canadian pop star and former EXO member Kris Wu detained on suspicion of rape

Chinese-Canadian pop star and former EXO member Kris Wu was detained by the Beijing police on suspicion of rape as announced by the police on Saturday. Kris Wu was accused of allegedly luring young women into sexual relationships. Earlier, the 30-year-old singer had faced the accusations of a teenager who said he had sex with her when she was drunk, but Wu had denied the allegations. She further revealed that she was contacted by women who said that Kris Wu had seduced them by offering jobs and other opportunities. Some of the girls were said to be under 18.

As per a statement by police in the Chaoyang district of the Chinese capital Beijing on Saturday, the former EXO member was being investigated over accusations made online of ‘tricking young girls into having sex with him’. As per a report by Weibo, the statement said, “Wu Yifan, 30, Canadian nationality, is now criminally detained in accordance with the law by Chaoyang branch of Beijing public security bureau on suspicion of rape.” Wu made his Hollywood debut in 2017 with the Vin Diesel and Deepika Padukone starrer action movie xXx: Return of Xander Cage.

Since the teenager’s accusations, more victims have voiced out their stories and also accused Wu’s staff of predatory behaviour some of which include boozy karaoke parties with the singer. The allegations have affected Kris Wu’s brand deals. Brands including Louis Vuitton, Bulgari, L’Oreal Men and Porsche have suspended their partnerships with the singer due to the backlash.
