On Sunday morning, British singer Ed Sheeran – who was in Bengaluru as part of his ‘+-=÷x Tour,’ surprised his fans with an impromptu performance on Church Street. While the surprise street concert turned into a quick crowd gatherer, it also saw local police step in to aid with smooth functions. Police stop Ed Sheeran’s surprise ‘concert’

As seen in the video below, earlier today, February 9, Ed Sheeran entertained his fans on Church Street, Bengaluru by picking his mic and singing. This impromptu gig got fans flocking to the sidewalk he was on in huge numbers and a crowd gathering. In order to maintain smooth functioning on the street, police officers stepped in. However, one of the officers on duty failed to recognize Ed Sheeran and instructed him to stop the performance since he had not obtained the necessary permissions.

In the now-viral video, we see one of the officers unplugging the microphone while the singer was still performing. Check out the video here:

In response to this viral video, Ed Sheeran took to his Instagram handle and wrote, “We had permission to busk btw, hence us playing in that exact spot, was planned out before, it wasn’t just us randoml turning up. All good thought. See ya at the show tonight x”

Reacting to this viral video, a X user wrote, “It’s disheartening to see such enthusiasm curbed.” Another added, “A rare chance for fans to connect with Ed Sheeran in an intimate setting was lost.” A third added, “The police man needn’t have been so rude though . He could have calmly explained the situation and given them time to pack and leave . Teach the police manners maybe?” Another disheartened fan tweeted, “Bro refused to sing in Kannada and this happened”

Post the video going viral, The Bengaluru City Police clarified their stance. They stated that while they hold immense respect for artists and their contributions, public performances – especially those attracting large crowds, require prior authorization to ensure safety and order. An official said, “Our primary concern is the safety of both the artist and the public. Unauthorized gatherings can pose significant challenges in crowd management and security.”

Ed Sheeran was in Bengaluru as part of his ‘+-=÷x Tour’ and was scheduled performances at NICE Grounds on February 8 and 9.
