A police statement confirmed that “Liam James Payne, composer and guitarist, former member of the band One Direction, died today after falling from the third floor of a hotel.” According to Alberto Crescenti, head of the city’s emergency medical service, the injuries sustained by Payne were severe and incompatible with life, leaving no possibility for resuscitation.

Emergency personnel rushed to the Casa Sur hotel in the Palermo neighbourhood following an emergency call placed at 5:04 PM local time (2004 GMT). They reached the scene within seven minutes and confirmed the singer’s death, having learned his identity shortly after arrival. Crescenti indicated that Payne suffered a fracture at the base of his skull from a fall of about 13 or 14 meters.

What exactly happened?

Police were informed by the hotel manager that Liam Payne passed away due to a fall from his room’s balcony. The Clarin newspaper released photographs purportedly showing the interior of Payne’s room. It featured white powder on a table with aluminium foil, a lighter, and a television with a broken screen. Payne’s body was removed from the hotel just after 8:30 PM local time, as fans mourned nearby.

Reports suggest that the emergency call was made concerning an aggressive man who may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Argentine media indicated the hotel manager reported a guest on drugs and destroying the room. The manager expressed concern for the guest’s safety, stating he had access to a balcony.

Following the announcement of Liam’s death, distraught fans—many in their 20s and 30s—gathered outside the hotel in the Argentine capital. “The news hit me hard,” remarked 27-year-old fan Pilar Bilik. Reality television star Paris Hilton expressed her sorrow on social media. She wrote, “So upsetting to hear the news of @LiamPayne passing. Sending love and condolences to his family & loved ones. RIP my friend.”
