The Namesake actor Kal Penn comes out as gay; announces engagement to partner of 11 years

Actor Kal Penn has come out as gay and he has announced his engagement to his partner Josh. Both have been in a relationship for 11 years. Kal is now planning his wedding with Josh. Kal whose real name is Kalpen Suresh Modi is one of the most prominent Indian-American actors in Hollywood. In an interview with the CBS Sunday Morning, while promoting his memoir You Can’t Be Serious, he opened up about his engagement.

Kal revealed that Josh and he had their 11th anniversary in October. Kal met Josh during his time working in Washington, DC. He told People that he discovered his own sexuality “relatively late in life” compared to many other people.

Penn’s family is also aware of it and they supported him. He added, “I shared things with my parents and close friends first. I know this sounds jokey, but it’s true, when you’ve already told your Indian parents and the South Asian community that you intend to be an actor for a living, really any conversations that come after that are super easy. They’re just like, ‘Yeah, okay.’ I felt very supported by everyone. That’s a wonderful thing. I know everybody has different experiences with that and so I definitely feel very fortunate.”

He said that he has always been very public about his relationship with everybody he has personally interacted with. He is really excited to share his relationship with readers. “But Josh, my partner, my parents, and my brother, four people who I’m closest to in the family, are fairly quiet. They don’t love attention and shy away from the limelight,” he added.

Penn further said that their families will be there for the wedding and he wants a big fat Indian wedding.
