Liam Payne says he suffered ‘severe’ suicidal thoughts and addiction while in One Direction

One Direction was one of the biggest boy bands ever. The band featured five boys Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Nial Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne, who were grouped together during their time in the reality show X-Factor. Once they were introduced as a band, there was no looking back. One Direction soon became a worldwide phenomenon for which fans were flocking outside stadiums days before their concerts. But, looks like it all got a bit overwhelming for one of the band member Liam Payne. Recently in an interview, Liam opened up about having suicidal thoughts and addiction at the peak of One Direction.

Liam told host Steven Bartlett during The Diary of a CEO podcast that he did have ‘moments of suicidal ideation’, “Yeah. There is some stuff that I’ve definitely never spoken about to do with it. It was really, really, really severe. It was a problem.”

Liam also said that he decided to change things around in his life when it came to alcohol and drug addiction after seeing photos of himself in the press, “There were a few pictures of me on a boat and I was all bloated out and I call it my pills-and-booze face.”

He further added, “In the band… the best way to secure us, because of how big we’d got, was just to lock us in our rooms. What’s in the room? A mini-bar. So at a certain point I thought, I’m just going to have a party-for-one and that seemed to carry on for many years of my life… It was wild but it was the only way you could get frustration out.”

Now, Harry, Louis, Zayn, Nial and Liam have all gone their separate ways. One Direction split up in 2016 after announcing their indefinite hiatus.
