Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach who have directed and co-wrote the blockbuster film “Barbie,” have emphasized the importance of crafting a meaningful narrative before committing to a sequel. Greta Gerwig & Noah Baumbach develop sequel for Barbie- Report

According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources suggest that Greta Gerwig and her collaborator Noah Baumbach have developed a concept for a sequel. However, both Warner Bros and the filmmakers have refuted the reports. Nevertheless, insiders confirm that discussions are in progress, with the project currently in its early stages.

The massive success of Barbie has left fans eager for more stories, and while Warner Bros and Mattel have shown interest in a potential sequel, the ultimate decision lies with Gerwig and Baumbach, the creative forces behind the film.

Greta on creative process

During her acceptance speech for the Time Women of the Year award in March 2024, Greta articulated her creative process, stating, “My North Star is, what do I deeply love? What do I really care about? What’s the story underneath this story? If I find the undertow, then we get it. If I don’t find an undertow, there’s no more,” as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. It seems that Gerwig and Baumbach have now identified that undertow.

Recent updates indicate that the duo has settled on a story idea for the sequel and has presented it to Warner Bros. Although no official deal has been finalized, preliminary discussions about scripting and scheduling are reportedly underway. If an agreement is reached, Baumbach is expected to collaborate with Gerwig as he begins work on the screenplay.

The writing team, known for their collaborative approach, typically exchanges drafts and feedback throughout their creative process. However, balancing the schedules of Gerwig and Baumbach will be essential to move forward with the project.

Noah Baumbach’s recent project

Currently, Baumbach is busy with post-production for his upcoming Netflix film. It is an untitled coming-of-age story featuring an ensemble cast. It includes Gerwig, George Clooney, Adam Sandler, and Laura Dern, among others. Meanwhile, Gerwig is working on her own Netflix adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia. Producer Amy Pascal describes it as having a rock and roll vibe.

Margot Robbie to play Barbie

While details about the sequel remain largely under wraps, Margot Robbie’s involvement is confirmed. Robbie starred as Barbie and played a key role in bringing the project to life as a producer through her company, LuckyChap Entertainment. She has praised Gerwig’s unique vision that made “Barbie” a critical and commercial triumph.

“Greta cracked the code on this film, as only she could,” Robbie remarked in an interview, adding, “It is such a singular vision, and Greta brought so much humanity, creativity, inspiration, magic, and joy to Barbie,” as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The film’s accolades include eight Academy Award nominations, with an Oscar win for Best Original Song for Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell’s What Was I Made For.
