Spanish-based show Money Heist returned with its final season’s Volume 1 today on Netflix. Fans of Money Heist always expect the unexpected and the makers have not disappointed in the first volume of Season 5 as well. You feel a whirlpool of emotions throughout the five episodes before they leave you an emotional mess. Déjà vu?

Spoiler Alert:

Money Heist Season 5 commences with Professor getting entrapped by Alicia and the ‘team in red’ feeling lost with no direction from Sergio. In Tokyo’s words, they felt like ‘orphans.’ Tokyo, Raquel take the charge with Rio, Denver, Stockholm, Manali, Heinskini this season as they try to hold the fort together sans Professor. The season does ups its game in terms of storytelling and focusing on the growth of characters. Given the format of the show, action is expected but the makers have weaved it well with the emotional graph as well. There is a strive to balance emotions with actions without compromising on the thrill and suspense.

The makers shed light on the inter-personal relationships shared. Flashback intertwines parallel stories together giving us an insight into who they are as individuals. The season is lot more inclusive as well. The heist brings together people from different locations, sexuality, genders and backstories, which is refreshing. This season is much better than the last season in terms of its pace and story. While the last season did seem like a confused bunch with everything scattered and all over the place, this season was more about cutting the chase and diving right into the action.

The story is tightly written with little room for extra editing. Every scene, every conversation leads us somewhere. Tokyo continues being the narrator for the show, with her opening up on her first love for the first time. There is enough backdrop given to tell us why she is part of this Heist.

Another standout for me was Stockholm. There was finally an arch to her character. Scenes where she was seen suffering with hallucinations and haunted by guilt was so beautifully portrayed, just enough drama to keep viewers gripped.

Everyone in the cast has done a phenomenal job yet again. It is always difficult to carry on the legacy of a popular show but the makers have lived up to the expectations for me. There is a little surprise as well. Fans who had been missing Berlin, the makers are making sure to not disappoint you’ll. Clearly, they miss him as much as we do. Berlin is seen carrying out a mini-heist with his son in flashback scenes which is enough to fill the void you had been feeling, perhaps.

There is just one flashback moment with Nairobi as well. In all this, the soundtrack of the season will definitely add to your playlist. The music goes perfectly with the scenes elevating the experience truly.

I am still confused about Alicia, honestly. She has become a paradox for me, at the moment. While there is so much I enjoyed, there were also moments which made me wonder what were the makers thinking? There is a scene where Marcella doesn’t suspect anything wrong watching Sergio lying down in a middle of heist, which is unbelievable, honestly. But nonetheless, the season keeps you on the edge throughout and gives you dialogues to remember and soundtrack to obsess over and a climax to sob over as well. Complete package, eh?

In Money Heist Season, we see a lot of arsenals being used, roofs been shredded to pieces, brave decisions being taken but can all of this finally culminate into a successful Heist? Well, Volume 2 releases on December 3 for us to witness that.
