Nick Jonas has been tagged ‘National Jiju’ ever since he tied the knot to ‘desi girl’ Priyanka Chopra at the majestic Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, in 2018. Be it a red carpet appearance in India or his band’s performance at Lollapalooza in Mumbai in January this year, the singer-actor received much love from Indians who called him ‘jiju’ aka brother-in-law. During a recent interaction with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Nick explained the tag to the host.

Nick Jonas on ‘National Jiju’ tag

During a recent interaction with Jimmy Fallon, Nick Jonas got candid about his ‘national jiju’ tag. Explaining the tag to the host, the ‘Jumanji’ actor said, “As you know I am married to Priyanka. When we got married this hashtag started. I was ‘National Jiju.’ Jiju means elder sister’s husband, so effectively I’m the older brother to India.”

The host then played a clip from the Jonas Brothers concert in Mumbai, in which Joe Jonas and Kevin Jonas introduced him as ‘Jiju’. This introduction got the crowd chanting ‘jiju jiju’ as they welcomed him on stage with loads of love. Watch the show snippet below:

Reacting to the video, a user wrote, “And Jiju is officially Most Important Person for Bride’s family, more than Bride herself.” Another took to the comments section of Fallon Tonight’s post and wrote, “Never thought I would call my childhood crush Jiju.” A third commented, “He is like the most respected firangi in India…”

A fourth added, “This is exactly why everybody loves Nick… there is nobody in India who does not like Nick… my mother is not very comfortable with English… she has barely listened to English songs in her life… never heard any of the Jonas brothers ever … but since Priyanka’s wedding video she is always like “Priyanka has married a nice guy” … trust me it means a lot when you have won the Indian mothers’ approval.”

Recently, Priyanka Chopra’s mother, Madhu Chopra, spoke about Nick appreciating Indian culture and rituals. She said that he is very respectful and appreciates Indian culture while letting them be as Indian as they possibly can. Madhu added that he was mentally prepared to be called ‘Nick jiju’ by the Chopras but didn’t expect to become ‘National jiju’. She said, “All of them know about him being called Nick jiju; his family is aware of this too. Priyanka had told him. However, he wasn’t expecting National jiju.”
