Oscars 2025 has once again postponed the announcement of nominees for the 97th Academy Awards. It is due to the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles, which have caused significant devastation and resulted in 25 fatalities. Originally scheduled for January 17 and then moved to January 19, the nominations will now be revealed on January 23.
Oscar 2025 postponed due to Los Angeles wildfires
These wildfires have disrupted much of Hollywood’s Oscars 2025 awards calendar in the short term. The Producers Guild of America has delayed its nominations announcement multiple times. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Tea Party, a seasonal highlight has been cancelled. Furthermore, both the AFI Awards luncheon and the Critics Choice Awards have been postponed indefinitely. On Monday, the Writers Guild of America also announced a delay for its nominees. It was initially set to be revealed on January 9.
In a joint statement, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang expressed their solidarity with the film community. It is already grappling with the aftermath of 2023’s labour strikes. “We are all devastated by the impact of the fires and the profound losses experienced by so many. The Academy has always been a unifying force within the film industry, and we are committed to standing together in the face of hardship,” they stated.

The Academy has extended the voting period for Oscar nominations through January 17. Additionally, the Scientific and Technical Awards, scheduled for February 18, will be rescheduled, and the annual Nominees Luncheon, originally set for February 10, has been cancelled.

What happened in LA?
The wildfires have greatly affected Hollywood’s awards season, leading to changes in events like the Critics Choice Awards and Producers Guild Awards nominations. Additionally, the release of the Netflix series Love, Meghan, featuring the Duchess of Sussex, has been postponed to March 4 instead of January 15. The Duchess expressed her gratitude to Netflix for supporting the delay to focus on those impacted by the fires.
The California wildfires have tragically claimed 25 lives, destroyed communities, and forced thousands to evacuate, including residents of celebrity-populated areas. Among those who have lost their homes are actors Mel Gibson, Miles Teller, and Jeff Bridges, among others.
