His son and actor Robert Downey Jr paid an emotional tribute to his late father in his latest post as he passed away. The Ironman actor said that his father was suffering from Parkinson’s and he passed away in his sleep at the age of 85.
RDJ called Downey Sr ‘a true maverick filmmaker and remained remarkably optimistic’. Robert Downey Sr was known for Putney Swope, Ball’s Bluff, Babo 73, Chafed Elbows and No More Excuses. In 2005, he directed his last film which was a documentary Rittenhouse Square, about a small Philadelphia park.
Sharing a picture of his father from his younger days, RDJ wrote, “RIP Bob D. Sr. 1936-2021…Last night, dad passed peacefully in his sleep after years of enduring the ravages of Parkinson’s ..he was a true maverick filmmaker, and remained remarkably optimistic throughout..According to my stepmoms calculations, they were happily married for just over 2000 years. Rosemary Rogers-Downey, you are a saint, and our thoughts and prayers are with you.(sic)”

Downey Sr was born in New York City in 1936 as Robert Elias Jr. But he had later changed his surname to Downey which was his stepfather’s name. This was so that he could enlist in the army early. After he returned from the army, he got into filmmaking.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Rober Downey Sr’s family. May his soul rest in peace.
