Taylor Swift’s ongoing The Eras Tour is one of the biggest concerts of the last several years, and it has always sold out. The concert commenced on March 17, 2023, in Glendale, Arizona and is set to conclude on December 8, 2024, in Vancouver after 149 shows across five continents. However, three of these shows – the ones that were to take place in Vienna, Austria this month were cancelled. The reason – a foiled terror plot aimed at killing and injuring thousands of Swifties.
The terrorist attack at Taylor Swift’s Vienna concert was intended to kill many
As reported by The New York Times, CIA Deputy Director David S. Cohen at the annual Intelligence Summit just outside Washington, DC commented on the terrorist attack planned for Taylor Swift’s concert saying, “They were plotting to kill a huge number, tens of thousands of people at this concert, I am sure many Americans.” Cohen added, “The Austrians were able to make those arrests because the agency and our partners in the intelligence community provided them information about what this ISIS-connected group was planning to do.” However, he didn’t reveal how the agency came to know about the alleged plot.
Talking about the foiled terror attack, three people were arrested in connection with the incident. This included a 19-year-old Austrian, a 17-year-old Austrian and an 18-year-old Iraqi. As per reports, the plot was inspired by the Islamic State group. On August 8, Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, head of Austria’s Directorate of State Security and Intelligence, said the 19-year-old Austrian suspect confessed to the allegations stating that they had planned “to carry out an attack” at Swift’s concert “using explosives and knives.” He added that the accused revealed he aimed to “kill himself and a large number of people during the concert either today or tomorrow.” Around 200,000 people would have possibly attended the three shows combined.
Taylor on the Vienna show cancellation
Post the cancellation of her concerts due to the terrorist attack, Taylor shared a lengthy note saying, “Having our Vienna shows cancelled was devastating. The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows.” She added, “But I was also so grateful to the authorities because thanks to them, we were grieving concerts and not lives.”
